Stupid question?
« on: December 30, 2013, 11:40:34 am »
This may be really stupid to ask, but what's the difference between Stage 2 and Stage 2+ tuning? I've been browsing around the various project threads and can't work out the difference.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Hmm, sort of answers the question. I get the impression that there's not really that much difference between stage 2 and 2+.

In a nutshell stage 2+ requires an upgraded hpfp vs stage 2. Other hardware remains similar.
With the uprated hpfp the map can be safely tweaked by using more mid range boost as the pump will be able to supply enough fuel. This results in more mid range power and torque.
Without traction power is nothing!

So, my current stage 1 tune is:

- K&N panel filter
- GFB DV+
- Cat-back Miltek exhaust
- AmD remap

So, in theory, stage 2 would be:

- Cold air intake
- Intercooler
- Down pipe + sports cat
- Stage 2 remap

And then stage 2+ would be

- HPFP
- Bosch injectors
- Stage 2+ remap

Just getting my head around the various levels of tune.

 stage 2 would be minimum:

And then stage 2+ would be

- HPFP
- CAI
- Stage 2+ remap

and if you want a bit of security:

Intercooler

Ah, OK. Thanks, however, now I'll be difficult and ask what benefit fitting a port and polished cylinder head would be? From various magazine and online projects, seems the bottom part of the engine is pretty bomb proof but the top half can be made better? Or is this only really a concern for stage 3+ tuning?

No need. If you have a gti engine you can go to 350/360bhp and conservative torque and not worry.

300BHP would be my top level, anymore and I'd switch to a 4motion or quattro drive train based car.

Does chassis or transmission modification affect stages or is it just assumed that various levels of tuning get upgrades in other areas along with the engine?

You won't get 300 from your turbo. 280 max.

I'd do your brakes before stage 1 tbh.

IMO must do:

Brakes
Walk
Rear Arb.

I drove a few cars with:

Full polybush kit
Tt lower control arms
F&R Arb
Light wheels

And it felt superb at 280bhp.

I have mk6 Golf R front brakes and R32 rear brakes to fit, with stainless steal HEL lines all round, got VW racing springs and plan Koni FSD shocks to help keep the car more stable. Looking at which ARB I want and also looking to have the whole car poly bushed for good measure. What does an anti lift kit do exactly? Briefly read up but it didn't click (I'm a little slow at times).

And I totally forgot the limit of the K03 then! Duh!
