Future sister inlaw has just bought an XC90, 56 plate SE D5 auto, good god its a lard arse!

Did a quick look when she got it, Honest job website flagged up a few issues, gearboxes & Transfer boxes were the main ones. Timing belts and waterpumps were noted as 60k or 4 years. Faulty injectors became common at 3-4 years, budget £1,500.

Yes, its a nice big car, loads of cabin space, practical with the 3rd row of seats, but you'd only fit small kids in the rear. For a 2.4 auto it is thirsty, have done 120 miles on the M1/M62 today and averaged 28mpg. Once up and running yes its ok, but the gearbox in comparison to my DSG is very lazy!

I'd certainly be happy having one as a family car as it felt very safe being in a large car

Around 06' the D5 engine output was altered and came with 183bhp not 160ish, makes a huge difference.

Tax on them is high with it being 215 CO2's.

Electrical problem galore as well, instrument clusters going ape, heated seats not working, a/c climate doing its own thing, they like to eat turbo pipe brackets as well! just a few of the problems the Volvo suffers from.

I would be more inclined to go Q7 3.0tdi you can pick them up quite cheap now for the first builds. Although big miles they should still be running well? But mega tax nearly 300g/km and quite slow 9s to 60 not that that should be a problem and only 27mpg!!
