Been to look at the M135i today , but unsure .....
« on: January 03, 2014, 07:39:01 pm »
With my wife having a 3 door  ED30 and our first child due soon we may need a 5 door.

So off we trot to look at the M135i today5 door, no doubt its a quality car . But it did just not tick all the boxes like i thought it would. The car had a better size boot than the last 1 series, but it still looked smaller than the ED30.

The driving position was sublime and the quality of the materials was excellent. The rear space seems a bit tight but that could be an optical illusion due dark interior and black roof lining.

Did not get to test drive it as they had no demo available. I sure it would be awesome on the road.

But we are just unsure whether to sit tight and see how she gets on with the ED30 or order a M135i (the are on special offer)

ED30 is paid for, the M135i will cost £3800 a year to finance

Any thoughts

I have a two year old, and both her and all her gubbins fit in it just fine. It'll happily take 4 adults and I'm just shy of 6 foot.

The boot isn't the biggest, as there's a big diff and subframe under there, but it's good enough. However, I also have an A6 Avant - so I don't have to rely on it being the only car for the family.

3 doors are doable, but a pain the the frigging arse, and why I got rid of my 135i coupe - fine when the kids are being compliant, but it's like trying to get a cat in a bathtub when they're not.

It's an amazing car for what it is and what it costs, but in your situation, I don't know what the best answer is?

I am sure it an amazing car, just no sure what to do. It will only get used once or twice a week for the wife to go shopping.

I have Range Rover but the wife will not use it , as she only likes compact cars.

Now puzzled , the £3800 a year will certainly come in handy with a baby to pay for but i could use the 1 series for trackdays and sell my track car.

If she loves the golf get her 5 door ED30 - she's happy and your quids in easy swap!

The wife never really wanted the ED30 , she had an Abarth 50 SS which she loved.

The ED30 is growing on her but getting a 5 door manual may be difficult in the same condition.

I went for a test drive a month or so ago in the m135i.

Interior is cheaply made - squeeks and rattles everywhere on a 1000 mile 2 month old car.

Seats v nice

Engine and 8sp gearbox very nice too, handling good.

Lacks options of rivals if you're looking to spec one nicely

Pro Nav almost too big in the interior

Looks barely any different from any other 1 series and is FUGLY.

We've bought a new S3 instead - much more rounded package and much higher quality.

I am sure you will  manage with 3 doors and if this is the only reason why you wanna change my advice is to keep eddie!

However 135i is the best car for the money in performance and driving pleasure - RWD nothing really comes close if you look at new cars.
