Right I think I'm starting to understand . So the canbus gateway , is it part of my car and I plug new stereos in it ? Or the new stereo has a canbus thing with it , and once I plug it all in car this is where the prob comes from ? I looked at the link above and if u read description and scroll down to pics then the wiring diagram shows u get a canbus with it ? Is Riis to sce the drain prob ? Or am i not understanding the canbus thing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-GOLF-EOS-GOLF-JETTA-PASSAT-7-HD-Car-DVD-Player-GPS-Nav-Radio-Touch-/120947427862?pt=UK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP&hash=item1c29074a16

It is this module that has to be L or above with a newer factory head unit.VW specific head unit's come with what is called a CAN interface, this is usually a slimline black box which talks to the car wiring - allowing it to switch on and off with ignition, put track info on the cluster, dim the screen when your headlights are on etc. Effectively making a non VW stereo act like one.A non mk5 specific head unit does not have this CAN interface, so you simply need to take a switched live feed from somewhere. Ideally buy a piggyback fuse holder off ebay and put it straight into your fusebox.
Don't get carried away and bid on this very cleverly worded advert for a VW RNS510 sat nav unit. Link. The seller is well aware it's a fake, and is clearly misleading people into thinking it's a genuine VW unit.
