What is the point of going over 300bhp on a front wheel drive?
« on: January 04, 2014, 07:35:29 pm »
I currently am at 270 and sometimes the car can struggle to put down the power. For those of you who are thinking or have gone over this BHP has your car not struggled to put all that power down? If so what was your motivation to keep increasing the power?

The throttle is made with a range to be used from zero position to full throttle for a reason...every high hp race car would have trouble as well if the throttle was mashed to the floor at all times, right? :cheeky:  :drinking:

From stationary it is impossible to put 300bhp down, granted.

Try putting the foot down from 30 to 70 (obviously it would be naughty to go any faster!  :ashamed:). That's when you can use it.

Yeap, I agree.

Once rolling there's a lot there, just pulls and pulls and pulls. With the right handling mods you'll also reduce the wheel hop and keep more of those ponies firmly planted to the floor on take off.

Mine will happily wheel spin in 3rd if provoked and in the wet if you get remotely trigger happy it gets fun VERY quickly.

If you fit an LSD you can put more power down more of the time, it's no miracle worker though. Linear throttle mapping would make the car easy to drive with big power too  :happy2:

It's all about applying the right amount of throttle at the right time.

Some people have gone 4WD to aid traction although it spoils the chuckability of the car and the car feels very "safe". This is why the GTI gets better reviews than the Audi S3.

4th gear wheel spin makes vcds logging on the wet near impossible. I went for 235 width tyres but it still spins in 4th  :fighting:
Don't get me wrong I love the K04 and I mainly wanted it for higher speed acceleration rather than traffic light Grand Prix.

What tyres you running, nankangs ditchfinders?

Get some Semi Slicks on there and wave bye bye to wheel spin. Awesome in the dry and if you get a decent semi slick they are great in the wet as well.  I have ran the 595 RS-Rs in some pretty extreme wet weather trackdays where many cars on road tyres were serverely struggling and was blown away by how well they performed.

If you want big power in a fwd car you have toaccept you need very grippy tyres that wont last a huge amount of time.

For some, yes :happy2:

Back in the seventies we would drive from town to the house with the switch turned on
for the whole route in a 1974 civic and a 1978 golf/rabbit  :drinking:

I wouldn't do over 300bhp again in a fwd. Admittedly it is fun, but over 350bhp the car ends up going slower over a 1/4 mile unless you do a cage and slicks.
Golf R gone.

300-350 is perfectly fine in the dry. In the wet however it's a different story. Mines ONLY running 311 and lights up the tyres for fun in the wet in a straight line. Add a bend into the equation and it gets much worse.  Same with everything, you learn to temper your right foot accordingly.
