You won't do any damage to your engine with the hoses the way they are.

fwiw with the first can version with the steel wool inside, the advice from BSH regarding the "freezing contents" problem that occured in the depths of the North American winter was to route the hoses like you have instead of the other way.

Maybe VWR weren't happy with the can  positioned on the driver's side...
