So who has successfully fitted one of these according to BSH's instructions which don't accommodate the 'charcoal cannister' nor access to the aircon taps without the BSH removal?

Mine was fitted today and we were far from happy with BSH's instructions for location - BS for Bull Sh!t quite frankly! So after much experimentation we decided a different location but one which will still allow every type of air intake to be accommodated except the Forge Twintercooler - Oh, and the ITG if the production version has that 'wall'.





^ BSH have totally ignored the fact that GTI's outside the U S of A have a 'charcoal box' and they have also ignored the fact that occasionally a VW mechanic will need access to the aircon taps. When you assemble it with pipes and bracket it simply won't fit the space satisfactorily.



^ We also improved it by changing the fixing to Allen key plus nut - This will make it much easier to undo the Bull Sh!t Holder's CatchCan's retaining strap.



^ That connection on the right was difficult to seat properly in the extreme - Literally finger ripping!

....Simple : -

1 - To add useful information to stokeballoon's thread on the subject of alternative locations.

2 - As a separate thread to bring helpful information to others who are about to try to install this according to BSH's instructions. Leaving my post only in stokeballoon's thread would most likely bury it.

robin,

mines is fitted just to the left of the charcoal canister next to the washer fluid cap, fits snuggly in there and still allows acces to the aircon taps.

I only have the standard bsh catch can not the large volume one which I doubt would fit there.

JKM also used some of the cut off piping which came with the forge twintercooler to go around the catch can so it does not make any rattling noises.

Wil get some pics up later if get a chance.

from your pics it looks like you have the standard size can.

so if you plan to get the forge twintake or itg one then you can always move the can to the other side.

will get pics up this weekend to show where mine is  :happy2:

Robin,

Have you run your hoses to the correct fittings?



The reason I ask, is in this ^^^^^ pic the Right hand hose is routed in front of the left, and out to the right of the pic towards the catch tank.

So you would expect the Right hand hose to be the lower of the 2 hoses in this pic below  (ie the lower hose in the pic)



The lower hose in the 2nd pic which you expect to be attached to the right hand union in the first pic, unless they
cross over each other again out of sight.

In the BSN instructions http://www.bshspeedshop.com/instructions/fsi_catch_can.pdf it states the following......

Step 6: Now run your lines. The fitting on the right side of the plate will be connected to
the top of the catch can. The fitting on the left will go to the lower fitting on the can.
Leave just a little bit of slack to allow for engine movement. Once cut to length, secure
the lines with the supplied hose clamps.


With the following pic copied from the above fitting instructions (hope you don't mind MR BSH) it shows the right hand union hose runs behind the left to the upper catch can union.



Just noticed it, and I hope all is correct.

And they do appear to be INCORRECTLY fitted if you check out the lettering to identify the hoses: The left-hand union hose appears to be connected to the top of the catch can : -



I best double-check and possibly swop them over ASAP - Do I need a special tool for those spring clips?

I've driven 170 miles like this - How important are those hose feed positions?

You won't do any damage to your engine with the hoses the way they are.

fwiw with the first can version with the steel wool inside, the advice from BSH regarding the "freezing contents" problem that occured in the depths of the North American winter was to route the hoses like you have instead of the other way.
