GT TDI's

Hi,

Long time since I have been on the forum. Sold my golf a couple of years ago and have had a cooper s since. I am starting a new job on Monday which is going to involve a 90 mile daily commute, forcing the sale of my cooper s as it is sh*te on fuel. I have been pondering what to replace it with for a while. I was set on a E90 320d m sport, but after researching the engine, I discovered the timing chain issue and this has put me off the vehicle (dont fancy a 2 to 6k repair bill).

I am thinking about returning to a golf with a mk5 GT TDI (140 or 170). Just wanting opinions on the vehicle from owners. MPG, any problems etc. My first golf was 1.6 (first car so could get insured on anything else).

What other cars would you be looking at for around 8k?

The early 140 had a few problems
1.porious heads
2.crap turbos
3.abs pumps
all these problems have been sorted on th newer one like 57 plate on wards so aim for there
the 170 model
was injectors and wiring but it is a recall and with the miles your doing the dpf should not cause problems

I've had a gt170 tdi a few years ago.....cracking little motor,only issue I had was the dpf....so I de-gutted the internals & remapped it

mines a 2008 gt 140 & so far all good just servicing & routine stuff

i got a gt tdi sport 170 cracking motor especially with a remap , a bloody quick car still returning low 40's mpg whilst booting it , love it

Can you stretch to a Mk6 with a CR engine?

Thanks a lot for that. I am looking at 57, 08's so hopefully shouldnt suffer to much with these issues.

Good to hear thanks. What sort of MPG are/were you getting on commutes?

I think I prefer the Mk5 shape, I like the mk6 modified but I wont be going too mad on this one.

I've not had the tdi engine in a golf but had it in both a Leon and an a3. If you can afford to buy a newer model car with the common rail engine I would recommend it, it's so much quieter and smoother. In my experience it returns better fuel economy as well.

^^This is what I was getting at, I have had a PD105 and PD140, now a CR140 and even though it has more miles on than both PD's, it sounds much better.

A bit over budget perhaps but this is a good deal for a nice looking car. VW warranty and service plan included as well, and it's been there a couple of months now so might move on the price. Only 100 miles or so away from you too.

The mk6's are a little over budget for me really. I dont want to be spending more than 8k due to the milage I will be putting on it

If you go for an 08, there's the gt tdi sport with black full front grill, black gti headlights, full heated leathers, rear window tints, better alloys. Aithough beware my 140 has the DPF, as it was a rare option.
MPG is not as good as MK4, best on a run 60mpg, my av of av is 56mpg

It would be fair to say i have had several MK5 TDi's and if i had to choose between the 140 and 170 it would be the 170. Make sure the injector and loom recall has been done and check the clutch doesn't rattle. My annual mileage is in the region of 25K miles and the 170 offers both economy (when driven carefully) and enjoyment. Admittedly a GTI would be better BUT given my daily commute it would also be more expensive to run!

Agreed - good fun but economical if you need it. Although I would say that as I have one! (For sale might I add  )
