Is 30 mpg achievable?

Hi all,

I know there are too many variables to consider, but do you think 30 mpg is possible from the following scenario:-

50 mile round trip consisting of 35 miles of moderate motorway traffic and 15 miles of free flowing A roads, all driven pretty sensibly?

I leave the non-sensible driving for weekends

I wouldve thought so. I do a mix of A roads and motorway to work (30 miles or so) and i can get anywhere from 37 on a good run, down to 22 because I was in a serious rush this morning!

Yes. I could get mid - high 30's on a run like that. Correct Tyre pressures, light right foot, coasting down to junctions using engine braking and a clear run without traffic lights all help to get great MPG

^^^^ Sounds about right. I usually get 34 mpg ish at cruising speed (60mph ish) and no more than 23mpg around town in my Eddy.

Your not rushing anywhere NEAR enough, I expect mid teens if I'm in a PROPER hurry!

I do 25 miles to work and 25 back, about half is on the motorway the other half around town, if I drive at 70 on the motorway and the traffic in town isn't too bad I can easily get 30-35 MPG BUT and its a huge BUT it starts drinking if you get a bit of a heavy right foot and if your sitting around in traffic and in low gears its not too clever, at very worst on my journey to work I get about 24-27 mpg but I use the motorway, before when I worked in town I would struggle to get above 25-27 driving like a granny, my cars stage 1 R-tech with no other mods, and it is definitely better since its been mapped BUT and again this is a gigantic BUT use the power or drive it cold or do short journeys it will drink fuel! All good fun though!

I had a commute similar to the OP's, and I averaged 28.5 to 29 mpg when driving as a zombie...and 26.5 to 27 mpg when alive. 
I found, when my mileage began dropping over the last 7 years, that the MAF was going bad, the coils were going bad, or winter's crappy fuel had arrived.
So, one needs to keep their mkv firing well to achieve top running mpg.
All that will effect the mileage are going to be:
plugs
coils
failing maf or O2 sensor
fouled injectors
running rich - vcds group 33
gummed up intake ports
old oil
using 5w when 0w oil is better for winter mileage
fueling not running optimally...etc.

I would not recommend that...
Especially when the engine is at temperature the cold weight of the oil has no bearing on fuel economy.....

I run 0w40 all of the time. It's for start up and idle until reaching operating temps where it saves on mileage.
OP, what is your cold tire pressure currently at? Do you check it early morning before the sun hits the tires or warms the air?
