I run 0w40 all of the time. It's for start up and idle until reaching operating temps where it saves on mileage.
OP, what is your cold tire pressure currently at? Do you check it early morning before the sun hits the tires or warms the air?

Currently dont own a mk5, i'm hunting for one as we speak. Just asking the question regading mpg really. Currently drive a s60 d5 which will still get 50 mpg with 4 flat tyres

Q: Does 5W-20 Motor Oil Offer Fuel Economy Advantage over 5W-30?
A: You should probably continue to use the viscosity recommended by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) which is a 30 grade. We have introduced two products: Mobil 1 0W-20 and 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy. We recommend you try Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy as a replacement for the 5W-30 you are currently using.

Better than my 330d at the moment showing just 34!!!!

Or perhaps I bought a TDi by mistake lol

Dope! Yes, you will likely get very near 30mpg ±

I think the mpg indicator in the mk5 should be read with a pinch of salt, as on my daily commute mines would often read between 33 and 36mpg, whereas my current mk6 R indicates between 29 and 32.

I get exactly the same number of miles to 20 quid as I did in the GTI..

Maybe in very very cold climates, in the UK it will provide less protection against 5w.
While I may change top end W depending on application (I ran 5w40 on my old PD 1.9 tdi) to offer extra protection, I noticed ZERO difference in MPG between that and the 5w30 that it WAS serviced with. I don't see oil as a way to improve fuel efficiency!! Especially when wind direction and tyre pressures (or even tyre brand) can effect far more...

And certainly at the expense of my engine I am not going to start running a 0 weight oil.. that's basically water. And I would recommend no-one else in our climate does that either. In Canada over winter I think yes it would have it's place absolutely but not here.  :happy2:

I've managed 41mpg indicated in my Jetta TFSI on a 160 mile run (mostly motorway)...2 people plus luggage too.

I got 38.6mpg on last year trip to Goodwood FOS, two people plus camping equipment, food and lots of Beer.
the trip was around 500 miles give or take.

Did it the year before in … dare i say it… a Focus ST and got 34mpg.

Just to put this in there, Golf is faster and more economical, also handles better but the exhaust pops of the ST are pretty sweet.

please note that on the drive down i was between 60-70mph and was driving carefully.

Fuel used was Vpower.

I think reaching 30 mpg is easy.  I can achieve it on a 30 minute trip (50% dual carrageway and 50% town), and I like to rag it around a bit!!

On the sort of journey you're describing, if careful I'm sure you could hit high 30s  :happy2:

If you're careful enough you can get pretty good mpg out of the gti. I drove to Heathrow casually and got 41.5

22 mile journey to work, 14 miles on motorway - returns 36-38mpg each morning.

Heavier traffic in an evening, but can see 31-33mpg on way home. As mentioned above if i get stuck in traffic it does drop 24-26mpg.

Ok fellas from all the previous posts I understand that 30 mpg is easy achievable. Just need the car now, can't decide on a 05/55-06 higher milage for £5-5.5k or bite the bullet and get 56-07/57 lower milage example for £7k. The missus is on my case as I was meant to be buying another diesel though, so I'll probably end up with a older higher milage example.

Thanks for all your help.

Phil
