Big Brake Upgrade Z18L & Z18R
« on: January 16, 2014, 01:59:03 pm »
People I need some advice

I'm strongly considering upgrading my brakes to Porsche 6 pots

I already have the calipers but Im after some advice on what size brake discs I can get away with,

also Id like to find out where to get the Caliper brackets from.

I've spoke to a company today and they seem to think that 350 is the biggest I can go on Z18's. is that correct?

Also does any one know what disc's you can use for the conversion

You use a Mercedes 350mm disc as found on big ML and G class I think.

You can the bolts which bolts the caliper to the hub, they're not radial mount are they and have a carrier, the holes are the same pitch as the standard hub so you just need bolts.

People say the master cylinder is too small but if you speak to people who actually run them they say the pedal feel is fine.

Not quite matey, the caliper bolt holes are 16mm and the OEM bolts are 14mm, so you need some shouldered bolts theyre available from Thomas at porschecalipers but i'd be researching the quality before I strapped a very heavy caliper to my car before installation.

I was making them for £100 a set out of Nickel plated EN16 which has a 70 tonne tensile strength which trims to 55 after machining, sold my last set and vowed never to make them again as people were just sleeving M14 bolts which is mental

Much better option is the 996 Turbo Calipers with a fitting kit over the same discs, its a FIA homologated caliper with loads of pad choice.

Whatever way you look at it, the Cayenne caliper is extra weight than stock with a worse pedal feel and limited pad choice and we're supposed to be upgrading.....

Nothing wrong with a purely cosmetic aesthetic upgrade but dont expect your jaw to drop when you jump on them for the first time unless of course your present OEM brakes are shocking

Thanks for all the advice dave appricated mate

I've been toying with this idea for a few months and as I have the calipers I think Id like to get them on to the car.

Dave am I able to twist your arm to make me up another set of brackets?
