Battery drain when fitting rcd 510 radio
« on: January 18, 2014, 07:31:55 pm »
How bad is it? Will it flatten the battery if left for a few hours or is it over longer periods?

Also how easy is it to replace the can gateway?
How hard can it be?

I've not experienced this myself, however from what I've read, I think over night might be sufficient to drain the battery without the updated gateway :(

I think the gateway is either stuffed behind the front wiper motor or up in the drivers side footwell somewhere...

Worth noting, aftermarket headunits don't need a new gateway. :happy2:

A new gateway needs coding but Eddie-NL on here could sell you one and precode it for you for a very competitive price.

Only a few can be upgraded. It will most probably require you to by a new CAN module! :happy2:

Someone on here can do it... but youd have to send it to them, and your car wont run without it. Just as well to bite the bullet and get a new one

I had the battery drain with my rcd 510 and it drained the battery every 4 days.

I followed the instructions in the "How to" section and made the fused link and fitted it in the fuse box behind the battery. That was a year ago and there have been no problems since. The only minor thing is that it takes the system 20 seconds to start up every time you switch on - trivial compared to a flat battery on a cold wet night.
