Spec of early Mk5 GTI
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:08:32 pm »
I read somewhere that the earlier Mk5 GTIs had a few spec items that were dropped later on - blue tint glass and (I think) a concealed aerial. Maybe soft close boot handle? Was there anything else, and when and why were they dropped?

No other reason than geeky interest!

Concealed aerial was a weird one as some early cars had aerials and some didn't

Dimming passenger door mirror disappeared on the MY06 (and later) cars including the bespoke wiring harness.

As far as I know, the blue glass was carried through the whole mk5 gti but I may be wrong.

As for the concealed Ariel, I've only noticed early low spec non gti's without a roof Ariel...

Cheers, interesting! Mine's an 05, with blue tint glass, no visible aerial, dimming rear mirror, and a soft-close boot handle. However, I wasn't sure which of those were on early cars only - and whether there were any other spec items that got dropped...

Projector foglights rather than reflector, more speakers 10 iirc that got dropped to 8, very early cars had open fog grills, aerial in rear window, blue tint glass. I think there was a couple of other bits but nothing major

Open fog grilles must've been dropped pretty early on then - mine doesnt have 'em.

Yes it did..... Or mine did from one car to the next. I much preferred the blue, a much nicer hue through the glass IMHO. Early GTI also had no aerial, depends when they were built, not the reg.

IIRC it was early, they were used in hotter climates but not needed over here so were dropped. The original ones with rear covers go for a pretty penny now, paid £50 for mine a few years ago. I think they're around £90 from the stealers if you can still get them.

As for the auto dimming mirror! My 04 plate don't auto dim?! It's not on the multi fuction? What's the coding for it as I can only guess it's been coded out?

Mine's got a little button on it, linked to a small green light. Not sure if they all have that?!

OT, but I must admit the open fog grilles look a bit odd to me - the fact that a single grille has a mix of open and blocked sections draws attention to the blocked ones!
