Slight play in steering + Knocking
« on: January 25, 2014, 12:03:15 pm »
Can any one tell me if this is normal? Or what is causing it?

I've checked all the bushes and they seem fine.  The noise seems to be coming from the centre of the engine bay, around half way up under subframe but right at the back.

The car is a 1.9tdi :)

Hmm yeah maybe.  Think I'm going have to bite the bullet and take it to a garage :(

mine did the same mate after a month or so after owning the car, luckily i still had some warranty and i bought it from vw second hand. any way they had it for 2 days and couldnt find the problem so stuck a whole new steering rack and arms its been fine since. god knows how much it should have been tho the receipt just says warranty on it.

Same here. knocking from the drivers side but thankfully covered under the RAC warranty which came with the car.

Just watched the video and it COULD be the rack bushes but i wouldn't want to replace them without a pit or ramps.

Not that I am aware. I replaced with OEM bushes, part number 1K0498884. You will need two of these. Each repair kit comes complete with the rubber bush and saddle clamps.

Wonder would that help with any play, as with all bushes through time, start to wear ?

This is the same noise as mine but mine doesn't have the play. Does it make a different being up on stands or not?

Thanks guys. I'm getting a garage to check it over for me on a proper ramp. Hopefully it will just be the bushes.

Also it does it when it's on the floor as well, not just on the stands mate.

Can't remember exactly, I think I paid £60 for both.

I still have them if you're interested. :)
