Full VW service history
« on: January 28, 2014, 09:42:17 pm »
Sorry to make a thread about this, you've probably had many of these but i dont think my question would have come up in the search.

I've found a nice mk5 gti thats close to me, its got 59k on the clock and is a 2006 plate. I sent the owner and email about the "full service history" and they replied saying that it was a full VW history until 09, then it went to Quarry Garage, Rotherham. I couldn't find anything online about this garage so am i right to assume they aren't a VW specialist?

Now i've had this reply im not too sure about the car as im pretty sure i've read about check the history to see if it is a full VW, or VW specialist history.

This is reason enough to have a look at it. It may be a well looked after car, don't get hung up on some non-vw history...any garage can do basic servicing.

Quarry garage, better known as Silverwood Test Centre.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

Thanks for the replys. Its highly appreciated.
I've just send the owner another message to see if the cambelt and waterpump has been changed. Its coming upto 60k so hopefully its been done already so it wouldn't be a problem for me.

if my maths are correct, with it being a 2006 plate, it should be due a cambelt change this year - they need replacing every 4 years or 60k miles (whichever comes first).

Hope this helps

surely if the car is a 2006, the 1st cam belt would have been done in 2010 (at 4yrs old), next one due this year..?

I always buy cars with full dealer service history, helps with resell too. But that's just me.

The seller got back to me and said the cam belt was changed when he bought the car in 2010, so it's definitely due another change as it's not been done again. Not sure how much this would cost, but I assume fairly expensive.

I know what you mean. There's 2 other cars I've seen (one DSG and one manual) but they are quite a drive from mine. I've contacted the garages that are selling them to see about the service history ect.

Think you can get cambelt and water pump done at main dealer for ~£450 and less at a specialist.

A long as the garage used genuine VW parts for the service and the correct spec oil there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Main dealer stamps don't actually mean a lot

Thanks Nodz, that definitely something id try getting off the asking price of the car as It needs doing. I'll try to find out if genuine VW parts were used. Will there be anything that tell me if they are?

I'll take that price into consideration when I go look at the car.

I googled, 'seat fixed price service', took it with me to VW, yes sir we will price match it.

Also bought my oil from ECP then took it in with me, 5L of castrol edge was £40, had £56 knocked off the bill.

I'd rather have a folder full of receipts by a knowledgeable careful enthusiast than 3 pieces of A4 paper and some stamps.
Most people who go to main dealers for servicing don't even bother checking their oil between services unless the light comes on!

Paying the most amount of money doesnt make the car the best condition, far from it sometimes..
