I got the Bosch S5 "James Bond" as well. Fitted it a couple of years ago and all seems good with it.

I bought a Bosch in December from Costco.
In the battery catalogue the S5 005 is listed as the equivalent for our cars but i went for the S5007 as it is exactly the same size as my original factory battery plus higher cranking Amps than the S5005.

in December i paid 80.36 inc vat for an 007
the 005 was priced at 65.98 inc vat

Sorry to bring this thread back to the top, but I have a battery question.

Last year I purchased a Bosch S5 05 battery for my GTi and I was wondering if I should of ordered the slightly larger, i mean longer, 07 model?

Getting my gti checked on tues as I still have starting issues. But also checking if it's alternator or poss sticky starter.  The 007 is the better battery to have than standard if my battery is goosed??

I just fitted a replacement Bosch  S5 008 which is exactly same size as the OEM Varta but slighly higher spec. Got it from EuroCarParts but via Amazon for (cheaper than direcly from ECP!)
77Ah & 780A cold cranking.

That's handy information but what was the price you paid and how long for delivery?

£88 plus £3.95 delivery. Ordered on Sunday arrived Tuesday! Came very well packaged. Was about £10 more directly from ECP

I've just changed mine for a Halfords HCB096 Battery, 680 CCA and 75 A/Hr

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/bulbs-wiper-blades-batteries/batteries/halfords-calcium-battery-hcb096-4-yr-guarantee

They're £84.99 but with a Halfords Trade card they're just £67.99

Mine was taking longer to start in the mornings and occasionally stuttering.  I'd see the volts drop down to 7 or 8 volts on a cold start too.

Now it starts first time.

The Halfords one comes with a 4 year warranty but its pretty much just a marketing scam as batteries rarely have manufacturing defects and if they do they'll be apparent in the first few weeks of use I'd imagine.

Good battery though, fits perfectly and Halfords will do a free battery check if you ask.

Halfrods batteries are OK, but can be variable quality. Had one of those HCBs in my Mk2 Golf. Was good for at least 6 years before I sold the car.
That said had a lot of trouble with Halfords battery in an old Escort - went back twice within 3 year warrant for a replacement. 3rd one was good for  years but other two failed at about 6 months and 2 years.  They did replace but they weren't happy.  :sad1:

This time decided to go Bosch for quality German workmanship  :happy2:

I bought a Bosch S5 Battery '096' in the Summer for £80 with ECP through eBay. Is the 007 the better one to have?

I think "096" is a generic code used by all brands referring to the physical size of the battery: my S5 008 was described as "096" on the paperwork.
I believe that S5 007, 008 are all same physical size & fit Mk5 Golf.  The difference is in the capacity.

S5007 74 Ah 750 CCA
S5008 77      780

Bosch specify S5008 for the GTI. You can download the whole catalogue here:

http://rb-aa.bosch.com/aa-batterien/gb/media/BA_Pkw_Kleintransporter_Anwendung.pdf

The S5 005 mentioned earlier in the thread is a smaller physical size "type 027"  S5005 63 Ah 610 CCA

Thanks! Mine says 77/ 780 in the specs, It really does help on these cold mornings!
