Car ended up being a write off :(
« on: February 10, 2014, 04:39:23 pm »
Hey guys,

Posted a message on here a few days ago as my car had major electrical faults. Turns out 9 modules were basically fried when I jump started my car incorrectly.
The cost of labour and parts is well over £1000 and even then the mechanics can't guarantee that the problem would be sorted 100%.

Luckily I called the insurance and they are covering me under accidental damage and will give me the market value back for the car.

I was wondering though, before the garage come and collect the car, is it worth me taking my stereo out and selling it separate or would I really have to leave it in there as I have nothing to replace it with? I think the stereo is worth a couple of hundred quid? its the RCD 510

Thanks

Craigh

It may be worth doing - depends if the Head unit was affected by the electrical damage?

Incidentally, how did you incorrectly jump start your car that caused all this damage? I ask as to avoid making the same mistake myself!!

Cheers

Rich

Well head unit works absolutely fine. However I just don't know if taking the stereo out would affect the market value that they give me back at all.

It's hard to tell how all this happened to be fair. Basically I jump started the car by looking on the internet at which lead to connect first ie positive or negative. I did it correctly but then the next day it happened again and someone in the street helped me jump start this time. As I was in my car the guy had took it upon himself to connect the leads but I have no idea in which order he did it... so this may have caused a power surge as we didn't use a surge protector.

This is the only thing I can think of that would have done it. Car worked fine before this though so it must be the jump start. Now the car won't talk to Vagcom and kept coming up saying all the modules were dead basically. Guy at the garage said the parts can cost a fortune even second hand.

Spoke to Alex at AKS tuning and he also said that even if you do fit all the new modules, there is no telling if there will be other faults or if other faults will occur a few days down the line and I will probably just plough tons of money into it. He said it is not even a job he would take on and for someone who knows these cars inside out... it must be bad.

If I had known all this could have happened by just jump starting a car I would have never ever done it. Who knew hey...

Could've been worse....

Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

At the risk of sounding really stupid, what's the correct procedure for jump starting with:

A) Another working car
B) A Battery booster device

Thanks

HOLY HELL.
Fire batman!

I've jumped loads of cars and never had a problem you have to be a pretty dippy person to jump it incorrectly. As helpful as some people are I'd never let anyone do stuff like that other than myself or an AA man who I can sue the hell out of if he breaks my car.

The main thing that is important with jump starting is giving three minutes for the voltages to equalise before starting either engine.

When Pug introduced the BSI with CAN multiplexing this was such a common issue (fried modules) when jumpstarting.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

I would presume that someone connected the jump cables to the wrong sides of the battery, and then when it started fizzing just ran away.  :signLOL:
