John's Tornado Red GTI. *Updated with BLQ's*
« on: February 10, 2014, 09:20:15 pm »
I've said hello already so I thought I'd start my little build thread, if you can really call it that. With work I aint really spent much time in it yet.

So I bought this the other week, Tornado red GTI DSG, with 49k on the clock. The times I have driven it, its awesome. My last car was a Volvo C70 T5 but the gearbox went within a year of owning it, which should of probably put me off another auto, but DSG's have the lowest miles on them from what i noticed whilst looking. I'll also say I thought the red would make me stand out, but I've noticed from these forums most of the GTI's are red too.

I do have a couple things planned. First off is changing the front and rear badges, the rear has "whiteworm", then ill repainting the black bumpers all round, installing a cruise control stalk, just simple stuff really.

Eventually I'll get hold of the monza alloys, and start with the remapping, and exhaust mods and stuff, but for now after spending money on the car, I'm keeping the changes small and cheap.

First thing i did was get hold of a new front badge, nothing wrong with my old one, but because of the white worm on the back, which Brookesb32 is making me a new one, i thought id changed them both to match.

This is how it started.

And this is what i changed it too.

Again being a chef, Ive had no daylight time to actually get it on the car which sucks.

Just put them in the other thread. Inside is completely standard, rcd300, no heated seats, no cruise control, and no armrest. Its the checker print seats too, which when i first saw on the pics for the GTI's i was looking at, i thought people were trying to pass off normal golfs as GTI's, it wasnt until i looked at MK1's that i realised it was a throw back, which did make me love it.

Thats the only pic i have of the car too, im gonna try to get some more when i actually have free time and some sunlight to take them.

Nothing major, just got finished early from work today so had some daylight at last to play around. Finally got the front badge on.

Original, Which I will probably look into selling now:

And the new one:

The colour isnt spot on, but thats because i didnt use the actual paint colour, i used a matte red spray paint can instead, more to keep in with the matte effect grill and stuff. Hopefully should be fitting the rear badge tomorrow if it shows up, cheers simon! and also get the Forge DV on too.

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10027.0.html

Well Simon it arrived and i wasted no time going out and fitting it, was a lot trickier to get the trim off than that guide said!! After about 30 mins of pulling and tugging it finally came off, then I had the joy of trying to get the wiper lose to get to that 3rd bolt. But im super happy with how the back looks now. So good to have matching badges.

And then this is the old one, tore the metal badge off straight away, needs a good sanding down now like, but im thinking about maybe painting it up as a spare or something.

You have been busy! And yep that trim can be a right beehatch to remove, those clips are super strong.

Looks great though  :driver:

A bit of filler and you could spray straight over the base, or you could sand down the badge and spray/wrap that to have a nice spare

Top job John

so how do you get the 3d badges to stay on them then? or can you not on this style of handle?

The old handle has a different base, as you notice the badge is stuck to it rather than clipped to it. You could wrap or spray the badge and re-stick like this,

or stick a 3D generic 110mm VW badge on top
This one i happened to wrap first - stuck directly the base

Or with lots of effort get the dremel out and trim the edge of the base and the inside of a genuine mk5 3D badge and wedge that on
