How to test freewheel clutch on alternator

Hi I have a problem were I suspect the alternator has packed in on my edition 30
It has only done 40k 
I'm  getting 11.7 volts running after jump starting.
Before  I purchase a alternator can come one tell how I can test the freewheel clutch pulley please.
Also is there a fuse in line with the charge from the alternator to the battery?
