Bike carriers/roof racks
« on: February 15, 2014, 01:35:33 pm »
Currently using my mates halfords boot rack one at the mo but have been looking at the roof rack kits as they look far more simple and faster to use.. Question is what to go for on a 3 dr 55 gti?

Have also looked on the bay of e but all variation in price

Thanks

I've been looking at getting either the a thule rack or the OEM rack then getting thule bike racks but the bars come in ~£150 and then the bike racks I've seen for ~£130 for a pair

The kits are silly expensive more so the aero bars, got a quote from dealers of £170 for roof rack which would be everything bar the cycle carriers.  So have been looking on eBay to see if poss get the bars cheap then work from there,  also I'm sure seen the thule carriers advertised as a pair rather than one.

I've used the Thule aero bars previous cars just need to get the foot pack for the golf. Have used boot carriers but he bars and cycle carriers are SO much more stable.

I got all my gear second hand. There are some things I would only buy new but after all a roof rack isn't the most exciting thing to buy and second hand saves loads.

True, it's not something that screams 'buy me' at any given one time! Haha

Still doing research, but I am thinking along that if can get bars cheap then will maybe buy fitting kit new and then it's just a case of finding the pair of bike carriers for a decent price.  And less hassle when wanting to put the bikes on and off!!

Yeah definitely worth getting the carriers hardly noticed them in my a3. Had a rear mounted halfords carrier and ended up chucking it out as it was so flakey.

Gum tree is pretty good as there seems to be less awareness of the worth of the gear. I managed to get a roof box (again another highly exciting purchase) do £20.

Buy some oem bars off ebay.

Get some Thule Pro Ride carriers - job done.

Don't both with rear mount carriers - high likelyhood of damaging the car plus once they're on you can't open the boot.
