RNS 510 or Kenwood?
« on: February 17, 2014, 11:02:16 pm »
Hi guys I've been looking at the Rns510 units and these: http://bit.ly/N3TBBr

What RNS 510 would I need to work with my March 2007 GTI ED30? I'd preferably like a LED one!?

And would that kenwood unit be plug and play? Would it cause battery drain issues with my car etc?
Anybody had one of these or both? Pros/cons?

Thanks,

Jay :happy2:

All RNS510 will work, but you will mosee than likely need a new CAN gateway, you are on the cusp of when the L came in (some K versions were ok but better to consider L as the minimum).

Battery drain in that respect does not happen with aftermarket HU's.

If you mean the DNX520VBT, I think they are not as good as alternatives these days (no cluster info display etc). The later DNX521DAB is much better.

I have had a Zenec NC2010 for a few years which 'out of the box' is better value and specced than an RNS510 and DNX520VBT, with full integration.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

I have the kenwood dnx521dab and it is the best thing I've bought for the car.
Great sat nav and has the iPod cable in the back instead of the previous dnx which had it in the front.

The dnx are a bit more expensive, but are definitely worth the money.

I was in the same boat but went RNS to keep it OEM.

The big difference between the two is that with the RNS you need to buy Bluetooth and the MDI for the iPod/mp3 player separately as the are 'bolt ons', also you may need to upgrade te canbus to avoid battery drain. By the time you buy all te bits 2nd hand your probably looking at £800+ depending on what revision RNS you go for.

With the kenwood it's all built into the unit to start with do when you add it all up the kenwood is roughly £999 fitted at the dealers and is an approved aftermarket unit by VW.

Hey buddy, I've got the dnx520vbt and it's great, the garmin sat nav is really good, parrot BT for the phone is brilliant that's all I use! However.......... Would be better if the iPod lead was in the rear instead of sticking out the front  :sad1:
As it's an aftermarket stereo it DOES NOT require the canbus gateway upgrading. I'm on 3 so I get unlimited data and a good signal so I play dab through my phone but my suggestion would be to see if you can afford the dnx521 unit as this has a rear USB,built in dab and shows climate etc! Either way get it installed professionally and get video in motion enabled (although your not supposed too  :rolleye:)

I paid £450 for the 520 unit a while ago but it's expensive from the dealer!

Here's the 521

Also this underseat sub woofer would work perfectly with both units

Hope this helps mate!

As the Kenwood is designed for VW/SEAT/Škoda it is as easy to fit as any other VW radio. It comes with all the correct cables/wires and is plug and play. No battery drain CAN Gateway problems either. :happy2:
