Loud Engine ticking noise (TSI)
« on: February 20, 2014, 08:44:25 am »
Hey, Driving home yesterday from work, I pulled up at the lights and noticed that the engine sounds really loud, Like a loud ticking noise, Similar to a 1.0 corsa. Before yesterday it was fine and ran a lot quieter then what it does now. No engine management light has come on yet, But i am expecting it to soon

This is on my 1.4 TSI Golf (56). Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

I'm going to sell this car this year, I've had nothing but trouble with this TSI engine.

Seems a daft one but start with basics and check oil level.

Thanks for the reply guys, I checked the oil level this morning and it was near full.

The timing chain tensioners? have been replaced twice on this car already.

Not sure what to do now, There is no engine management light so i'm guessing nothing will show on the diagnostic? or is that wrong?

Also, For the past week, I could feel like a misfire or something like that when it pulls in 3.

have you got any loss of power from idle to 3k revs? or any coolant loss? Or does it make this noise Louder from cold start for about 3 or 4 seconds?

I had a 1.4 TSI before this, needed a lot of expensive repairs last year. The timing chain needed replacing in the Summer as it developed a loud rattling noise similar to this
, the variator (camshaft adjustor) needed replacement at the same time then a couple of months later it needed a new turbo.

I've had enough of the TSI, Last year i spent over £2k on issues like new ECU, new egr valve and new coil packs.

I have took a video so you can hear the sound of the engine.

You mentioned the tensioner has been done, but was the actual chain replaced? They are prone to stretching over time resulting in poor running and eventually jumping a cog causing major engine damage

I can't remember tbh. I would have to check my paperwork. I had a lot of work done at the same  time as having an oil leak fixed, Which was costly on labour alone.

Has anybody watched that video and have an idea? Started it this morning in the freezing cold and it was hardly noticeable for the first 5 - 10 mins

webuyanycar are willing to pay more then my settlement fee for this car. So if need be, I could go down that route.

That's the same place mine ended up! They didn't even test drive it.

Was it an easy process?

Going to look for a GTI or Edition 30 after i get rid of this TSI.

I also went through 5 coil packs, within a year, All done at Vw

Very easy and painless, much better than I expected. Knocked a little off the price quoted but it still worked out as more than I was offered elsewhere. Hoping my GTI should be a lot more reliable.

More 1.4 TSI horrors it seems! My 1.4 tsi 122 in my MK6 is the only one that seems to work ok but the question is for how long :/  :scared:

Juggling whether to keep it and endure the painful bills or shift it while its running sweet?

Was talking to a VW tech who said VW knows these are a common problem and willing to give around 70% goodwill on repairs around the timing chain etc if the car is maintained regularly. Was yours serviced regularly and whats your mileage?

Mine had its timing done last may, So it's not even been a year yet.

The TSI i have is the twin charged engine. It has been alright since last July/August, But seems when something breaks on these engines, It's not cheap to do anything.
