Please help me cost up my salvage *UPDATE*
« on: February 20, 2014, 05:31:12 pm »
Hi guys,

Posted a message here not so long ago about a major electrical fault that I caused more than likely by jump starting my car. Blew 9 ecu modules and tried to claim through the insurance. Well they took my car away and got one of their engineers to look at it and they have come back to me saying they won't cover me for accidental damage to mechanical or electrical. They also said that it could have been caused by wear and tear! WTF?? When does a car have such a major electrical fault through wear and tear.

Anyway they said I could get an independent garage to inspect and if they can prove it was caused by my jump start then they will look into it again. To be honest I really cba with all that and I haven't got the money to be paying someone to do that.

So I am going to sell the car in the state that its in unless anyone has any other suggestions. However I need some help in costing up what my car is worth in the condition that its currently in. I don't want to sell all the individual parts like the engine etc because I don't have the room to store car in the meantime and all its parts. Just to clarify. The car does drive and drives beautifully. There is absolutely nothing wrong mechanically. Car drives like it normally would. and headlights are working apart from the high beam (the one when you flash lights). ( I do have the read out from VAGCOM if needed). It basically said 9 of the modules are not responding with the computer.

SO...

Its a Tornado Red Golf GTI Mk5 2005.
Manual.
118000 miles on the clock.
18" Monza alloys.
Its pretty much as standard apart from it has an R-Tech stage 1 remap.
It has 12 months MOT (literally just had it MOT'd and passed with no advisories and has 5 months tax).

The car engine and mechanical parts are in fantastic condition and it drives beautifully and pulls like a train! However the only fault with the car is the electrical problem (indicators, wipers, windows, locking etc do not work).

It had a service in November 2013 and included, PCV (latest revision) cambelt and waterpump change and has only done maybe a couple of thousand miles since.
Brand new KO3 genuine turbo fitted a year ago and DV valve (latest revision).
Cam follower done a year ago.
new pads on the rear.
4 brand new tyres (Uniroyal Rainsport 3) fitted only a couple of weeks back. They have done less that 100 miles! (GUTTED).
Monza alloys are in ok condition (scuffs and could do with being reconditioned)
Brand new Exide battery again put in only a couple of weeks back.
Bodywork is on good condition apart from the usual stone chips.
All engine work done by Alex at AKS tuning.

If anyone could help me work out what I could sell my complete car for that would be great. I know these engines alone can sell for over £1000 and that's without ancillaries however I am not willing to sell individual parts. Whoever buys this would need to buy the whole thing.

Thanks so much in advance.

Still gutted :(

question, if youre getting rid of it would you consider swapping the 18's for the GTI 17's?

I would rather keep the 18's so that whoever buys the car can make maximum profit on the parts should they wish to sell them. Sorry.

Why not just replace the modules what's defective and keep the car?

You just need a bit support mate and you'll either fix it or beat the insurance company!

Well the labour cost. The parts cost and they have to be coded I was told? The problem is I don't have a great deal of money at the moment as just moved into my first house and I can't risk having the work done and then another problem crops up when they have been replaced. Not too sure how simple a job it is.

If someone could get it working they would have a beaut car on their hands. Even if someone bought it to sell as parts they would make a packet. Seats, wheels and brand new tyres. Bumpers, engine, new turbo etc... I just haven't got the know how, tools or time to break it all down and do it that way even though I would make a lot more money. If someone else wants to do that then fine but I have to sell this as a whole car unfortunately.

Post your scan up and ask who's got those modules available for sale at a price to help a fellow member in difficulty!

You never know unless you ask!

Surely an independent garage or mechanic wouldn't charge much to do the required review. I even bet you could get an RAC qualified person to look which would back up the info that doylebros mentioned.

You will lose far more I take it just selling the car, much more than half an hour or more for an Indy garage to look and come to conclusion on the situation - you have to fight this one mate!

I'm sure if any of the guys on the forum in your local area knows a decent Indy they could point you in the right direction  :happy2:
VCDS cable HEX-USB+CAN. New but can do the basics including coding

Thanks for that info mate. However even if I showed them this, Privilege (insurance company) are saying that they don't cover damage to the electrical system. On the policy it says We will not cover... any mechanical, electrical or computer failure, breakdown or breakage;

So surely me jump starting it and causing electrical damage would not be covered going on their policy wording?
