Golf GTE - Thoughts?
« on: February 20, 2014, 11:12:25 pm »
I think I want one as a commuter. We even have an electric plugin wallbox at work which is 20 miles away.

Looks and sounds good, but no doubt it will have a ridiculous retail price of WAY more than a Golf R.

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/85854/volkswagen-golf-gte-plug-hybrid-revealed

Key points:
1.4 TSI engine with 150ps
Electric motor on tripple clutch DSG gearbox with 105ps
Combined power output of 204ps
188mpg in range extension mode (small fuel tank & battery pack)
31 miles on battery only power
3.5 hours to charge on a 3 pin plug
2.5 hours to charge on a proper charge point
35 g/km co2
8" Pro nav as standard with gadgets to monitor battery range etc

I looked at these with the range extender, the 5k grant plus BMW discount puts them at 118d money, but with faaaar better economy and residuals.

Like it or not, they're going to be big business soon. Could be as close to free motoring as you'd ever see for early adopters. It's just that whole filling it up with electric thing (although fast-charge is 30 mins or so).
Sideways yo!

Ha!

No, it was just a bored 15 minutes in work discussing commuting cars should our employer fit charge points.

They're getting to the point now of being nearly viable as a second car for most. Some very clever tech.
Sideways yo!

The Golf is coupled with a 150ps 1.4 TSI. The electric motor is 102ps on it's own. Together they produce 204ps.

If they were cheap, I'd be all over it. But adoption rates will be low as it's cheaper to just go and lease a GTD. The i3 is great too, so long as work would let me charge something like that for free.

I think the GTE is an excellent prospect. GTI styling and driving dynamics, with 30miles electric only driving range or electric & combustion motor as a range extender.

An Up! Is too small for a motorway commuter.

It annoys me how vw try to make cars like the gtd and this gte thing look similar to the gti. Why do they have to do this, give the gtd and gte there own styling for heavens sake.

Electric isn't the long term answer.

I actually like how they have similar styling, groups them together as the top model in their particular engine guise. I don't think a GTD or GTE as well in this case should get any less styling just because they aren't a petrol. Really like the look of the GTE here

I really like it, and I want one! Haha. Does the petrol engine charge the batteries? That would be the only way I could have one, as I live in a top floor flat. Heh

You would assume it has some kind of battery regeneration from the brakes and engine and gearbox etc.
