Edition 30 to Skoda vRS TDI
« on: February 21, 2014, 04:17:34 pm »
Considering chopping in my Edition 30 for a Skoda vRS TDI. Has anyone on here done this and what are your thoughts on the Skoda?

Main reason is that we're moving office and I want something that gives better MPG than the GTI but still looks good and has some grunt.

Cheers,
Billy

You will definitely get better MPG from the vRS and the have good mapping potential. I'm currently at 220bhp/351lbft and over a 13 mile commute to work I can average 52mpg.

Have a look at Eddie NL's in the owners rides - Estate version

I have had similar thoughts too and the Garage is less than 2 miles from me :rolleye:

Is this the same CR diesel engine that is in the GTD MK6 Golf... I ask as I am thinking of getting my GTD done to stage one and just wondered who you have used as these have locked ECU's .

Mine is the PD engine. Had it mapped at CC Tuning in Burton on Trent. You have PM  :happy2:

Just be careful as doing short runs very can cause the dpf to block up. I had a mk2 VRS Tfsi  and made the switch to a Ford Focus Ecoboost. You should consider the new Focus ST as that has 250bhp, can get 40mpg+ and cheaper on road tax. JannerSy made the switch and is impressed with the ST. Also they remap to about 290bhp with no other mods needed.

But it's a Ford and will fall to bits.    "Fix Or Repair Daily"

I'll assume you're talking about the CR170 TDI in the Octavia vRS, in which case - I've done the MK5 GTI to CR170 TDI jump... and I'm not looking back.

Yes I miss the TFSI growl and the 'status' of a petrol car (everyone has a diesel daily these days) however, with a stage 1 map (I run Revo) the 3rd and 4th gear performance is very impressive. The torque is in boatloads and motorway overtaking is a doddle, right up to silly speeds.

When I drove to the Ring' I squeezed 740 miles from one 55 litre tank (brim to brim with a rescue can filled in the back, didn't run out) and in winter I see 520 from a tank, summer goes up to 590/600 miles ish' driving style dependent of course. I have phases where I don't hang around but most driving is mixed. I've never had it below 32mpg even when trying hard  I can run to the shops in the snow (not even a mile round trip) and it won't drop below 25mpg.

You won't find a purist or high earners doing it necessarily, however literally half the tax, double the mileage, 15+ MPG in all conditions and cheaper insurance made it a no brainer with 200hp in the same sorta weight'ed car, especially to allow me to get some property under my belt  :happy2:

So, aside the sound - I don't think you'll feel performance naked whatsoever and with stage 1 and 2 maps, this will leak from your mind quickly. I certainly don't feel like it was a drop down the performance ladder and I thought very carefully about jumping to the black pump, as I expected it'd be an issue too....

Of old yes but what car manufacturer doesn't have troubles. Just look at all the issues the mk5 has with the engine pcvs etc and the latest 2.0tsi timing chain tensioner issues. Plus all the issues on the 1.4tsi. I loved my Skoda but I have to be ruled by economy now I'm commuting again and I don't regret making the move back to Ford. Id give one a try and see if you like how they drive. You can get the Focus Titanium X 2.0 diesel with all the gadgets for a good price and they remap to 190bhp if you need it. Mine is the 1.6t Titanium  petrol and about 180bhp ish. It returns 40+ mpg and up to 56mpg on motorways. I opted for the Ecoboost as it good on short journeys and does not take an age to warm up like diesels. It gives good economy on motorway runs and only cost £128 for a years tax. Running costs are low and it has all the gadgets. I wouldn't buy a diesel again seeing how good Ford have built this engine and that diesels now command a premium. Unless you are doing about 30,000 miles a year there is no benefit having a diesel,  as you pay more for the car and diesel isn't any cheaper than petrol.

You wont convince me to swap my GTD for a Focus m8...

Could be worse ... it could be an Audi  :signLOL:

Getting back on topic... I had a MK4 PD150 GTI diesel for many years then went to a Mk5 GTI DSG petrol and kept it 18 months, cracking car but the fuel was a bit of a shock to me so I have now gone to the MK6 GTD DSG and it uses half the fuel and pulls like a train in any gear, Not quite as fast top end but a stage 1 map should put that right. The best of both worlds m8, Take one for a test drive and see.
