Mines a bit rattley on start up, but its ok once warm, i had my cambelt and tensioners done recently and didnt make any difference to it.

Fan wise, the smaller one stopped working in July, its annoys the hell out of me but its £250+ to fix, why cant VW learn how to make a fan last??? They had the same problem with the Mk4 surely they are aware, its probably paranoia but i'm sure certain things are designed with a 3-4year shelf life to keep the garages in business, £100 an hour labour...Whack!  :rolleye:

Does the fan come on all the time?

Mine did at one point and turned out to be a motor at fault. Fixed under warranty and never heard it again.

Hey E30 no the fan doesn't stay on, it comes on but very very loudly to the point where people turn around and look at you lol. But turns  out the smaller fan hasn't been turning on which means the larger fan has been spinning faster to pick up the slack.

Doesn't sound like anything too serious mate, sounds like everything should be sorted soon and you will be back behind the wheel   :pomppomp: :pomppomp:

Another little update

Spoke to the dealers just now and i'm not quite sure about this but the horrible diesel sound on start up was apparently down to the flywheel knocking? Now does this sound rite to you guys?. I have pretty much said that if i go to pick the car up and it still sounds the same i will be leaving it there till it's sorted.

Also i cannot believe this, but my brakes have started to squeak quite badly when i slow down to the point where it's really doing my head in. I asked them to sort this out and i got the reply that basically it's because the brake dust builds up and cars like this will do this!!. My response was "your telling me most Gti's that have ever been sold all do this?" and his response was yes. He said that i could take them apart and clean them but it would happen again. Now can you tell me if your brakes squeak please?.

One good bit of news is the fan has now been fixed and is working lol.

Cheers guys

mine dont squeel at all.

in the past when ive had brakes that squeel i take them appart have a good clean up scuff the face of the pads with some sandpaper and copperslip the runners and on the backs of the pads and it cures it

not a sound from the brakes...

do you do many miles? how long was the car sitting idle? was it just after or does this happen all the time?

I don't do many miles at all really maybe 14 a day. The car mainly does it for about 10 minutes from cold then slowly starts to find away. But I always get the clunk when starting the car, which they said they have sorted.

Could the brakes be because I don't drive it much? Or would you say to the dealers you wan it sorted? I only bought it 2 weeks ago.

my car sits at work for 4days then i must do about 30miles the following 4days then the cycle starts again. My breaks have squeeked but after some hardish breaking it disappeared.

Previous cars that squeeked i have had cleaned either by compresed air (doesnt work v well) or warrenty as they have squeeked since new. Personally id get them cleaned free by the dealer then see how it goes as the squeeking might not return for a long period of time, and then u might be ready for some pads that produce less dust...

for the brake problem i would check if the brake pads had been upgraded by the previous owner some track spec pads squeal when they are cold due to them needing to be really hot for use, obviously they have higher operating temps which are seldom achieved on normal roads.

Its just a thought.

i had the same with mine a few months back and it ticks and rattles loudly when cold, eventually got it sorted under warrenty and was the cam belt. mine is now silent and all i can hear when turning the ignition is the exhaust, just how it should be. good luck getting it sorted  :happy2:

Now thats what i like to hear silent as a whistle, although it would be nice to have a little growl on turnover. I think this could be the problem them. Should a cam belt go after 20k though? or does it not really matter time wise to much?

mine was just under 20k when i bought it and a couple of thousand later i noticed it was very loud especially in the mornings during winter. i aksed a few people before taking it in and it was golfgirls other half gary who said its the cam and to take it in asap so i did and my car was there for a couple of days because they swore it couldnt be the cam at such low milage and thought it was air con then realised the belt was fooked and replaced everything in there. if i left it much longer i could have ruined my engine so its good that you have taken it in lets hope they can find the problem

Well I too have the tractor rattle syndrome on cold mornings. Looks like this might be the cause. I will get it back in to VW.

My car sounds abit like a diesel on start up and then is a little tappety. ive just have my car in the dealers and they said it is normal, apparently it is the high pressure fuel pump that causes this tapping noise, but the video is far more extreme tap!
