windscreen replacement
« on: February 28, 2014, 05:15:54 pm »
Chip and 20mm crack has spread from top to bottom of screen
Done the insurance bit to be informed I can have OEM with the vw logo if Im prepared to wait and insurance company authorise it. Is it worth waiting for the oem or should the non vw logo glass be just as good

I'd wait for the OEM screen, I always have  :happy2:

Although Autoglass/National/ your insurer will inisist that an 'unbranded' screen is exactly the same as the OE one just without the logo, the truth is that they are rated lower on the optical quality scale than the OE versions, had this from the horses mouth as it were as a family friend is involved in the production of windscreens for a major supplier  :happy2:

I've been thinking about this as I may need a new screen sometime soon. I would prefer oem as they are better, and don't want any problems with a copy.

I have heard some insurance companies will not supply oem because of the extra cost.  But here's a thought, if the insurance company will only replace with a non standard screen, does this then mean they could put your insurance premium up because your car is now non standard because it has a "modification" ie an after market screen.

If they don't, its kind of double standards isn't it, and shows how much of a con insurance is.

For what it's worth I've never had a problem getting an OEM screen fitted on 3 occasions so far, takes a little longer to get them in stock but always found my insurers very helpful albeit you have to be insistent that you want an OE screen  :happy2:

I'd also insist the fitting company use the correct method of removal of the old screen, on the mk5/6 the old screen should NOT be cut out due to the very high probability of paint damage under the bond, they should use a suction cup mounted ratchet 'cheese wire' device to cut through the bond around the screen  :happy2:

Quite right there mate.... Ideallyyou should only ever use auto glass.. They developed the "suction cup thingy cheese wire" it's called ezi wire and is fantastic to use.... By far the best and only way to remove a windscreen...... I was in the industry for nearly 17years and only recently changed...
