Issue with Alpine Headunit - Car related or HU related?
« on: March 06, 2014, 02:52:09 pm »
Hi All,

I have a bit of a weird problem with an Alpine W530BT head unit and was wondering if anyone had any ideas...

It has been installed in my car for over a year now and has worked flawlessly until recently.  Basically the whole screen and buttons flicker all the time when the engine is running.  Once it is in this state, the Bluetooth module does not work and I cant do anything with the radio (The stations just flick through and don't tune into anything).  There is also a weird buzzing noise when I turn the volume up on the CD source.

At this point I would assume a faulty head unit and either get repaired or buy another, but the thing is.. it works absolutely flawlessly when the car is not running.  If I switch it on with or without the ignition engaged, everything works as expected, no Bluetooth issues and the screen stays as it should.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be the cause of this.. does it sound like something on the car which could cause this, seeing as it is only affected when the engine is running?  Are there any fuses, or wiring I should be looking at first, before I take it into a stereo shop to diagnose?

Thanks! :)

Sounds like a loose live or earth back of head unit

Check the plugs into the back of the HU. I've just had a similar ongoing problem with an iPod lead. Hope you get it sorted pal

Hey.. Thanks for replys. I've had the unit out and checked all connections.  Everything looks fine. Have also run an extra ground to it to rule that out as suggested.. But it still has issues when the engine has started. Frustrating!! :(

Might be something loose inside headunit, or one of the pins inside connector plugs has pushed out a bit
