Service due soon, opinions pls!!

Morning all, my ED30 is due a service in the next few weeks and here' the thing it as a full VW service history but I have always tended to do my own services as I know what's being changed and what quality products are being used. I always keep receipts and staple them together and as I work in haulage have a company stamp to put down in the book so have all details on what's been done.
The car is approaching 39k so also wanted to change the cam follower and upgrade the DV to version G.

So do I do what I usually do and do it myself or take it to VW that will charge me a lot more for the same job, just wondering what people think and if they was buying a car what difference it would make to them??

Go to a decent independent garage.

Do it yourself. Just keep the invoices for all the parts you've used and then write it in the book, I've know a few main dealer mechanics who never change the oil filter in a service !!!

Yea I'll make sure I write in the book and also do a check sheet. You never really know what they have or have not changed and charge you a fortune for it. same with the oil I prefer to use Castrol edge,

I auto data do the full service check sheets for the miles of the car. I'm sure you'll find something on line.

If you know what you're doing DIY is very satisfying. There is plenty of help online for jobs that you may be a little uncertain with. I think it's a case of 'know your limits'; for example I worked out how to change a cam follower, but I'd never attempt a timing belt.

If it's a question of trust but your are happy to pay labour for servicing then go to a trustworthy garage. You may need one for more serious issues in the future and it can be beneficial to have built a relationship with a garage. They do become used to your expectations and sometimes make decisions based on what they know of you.

If cost is a driver then do it yourself and document as thoroughly as you can.

If whatever you decide to do would honestly satisfy yourself as a prospective buyer for your own vehicle then I would say you have made the right decision.

Some good advise cheers people. Im pretty mechanically minded and this site is fantastic to help and guide you through jobs, as tortaruga said I think id draw the line at timing belt and detailed engine work but from working on lorries at weekends can do most jobs, if I'm not confident I simply would not attempt the job and leave it to the pro's

I think I'll get all the bits I need and do it all myself, the money I save on labour i can put towards a ITG maxogen iv been wanting

To be honest as long as the paper work is shown for the cars service and history ect dealership service history doesn't bother me as long as the car as been looked after and well maintained, big believer in buying cars from forums as you can find out more about them and generally well looked after

I've done the very same thing for years. Write in the book, keep the receipts and when it's time to get rid you'll be surprised how much you don't loose. Very satisfying to know it's been done with care and attention (OCD as it's called nowadays )

^ This! Exactly what I do... total peace of mind and I guess Iv got some OCD too haha!
