Common Faults & Mileage
« on: March 06, 2014, 09:18:18 pm »
Hey Guys

Last thread I promise :)

What are the common faults I should be looking for with a GTI that has covered 80,000 or more miles?

Rust around the front wings caused by foam. Currently having mine repaired, quite a common problem. Also check the air conditioning, switches, compressors etc are prone to failing too.

The rubber tears on the diverter/dump valve after a while. If it doesn't feel like its boosting properly then its probably this.

Check the  air con take it to warm and then down to cold and back again to male sure its working.  three doors apparently can let water in so check seals, check airbag lights.

Make sure cambelt and DSG services have been done.  I prefer a car serviced at least annually not the variable service schedule.

Rust in rear hatch, rust in the C pillar where the seal from the rear doors can damage the paint (5 doors), rust on the panel below front wings.

Also check the rear tyres. Mine were sawtoothed due to the rear parts failing. Can't remember exact name. But from looking under rear of car in the middle there are too large figure eight links holding the back together. Can't miss them when looking. They tie the back together. Simple to change. As the rubber fails the track fails and scrubs the tyres. The parts were about £80 and obviously two tyres also. Check in inside of the rear tyres to detect this.
