Considering chopping in my Edition 30 for a Skoda vRS TDI. Has anyone on here done this and what are your thoughts on the Skoda?

Main reason is that we're moving office and I want something that gives better MPG than the GTI but still looks good and has some grunt.

Cheers,
Billy

I'll assume you're talking about the CR170 TDI in the Octavia vRS, in which case - I've done the MK5 GTI to CR170 TDI jump... and I'm not looking back.

Yes I miss the TFSI growl and the 'status' of a petrol car (everyone has a diesel daily these days) however, with a stage 1 map (I run Revo) the 3rd and 4th gear performance is very impressive. The torque is in boatloads and motorway overtaking is a doddle, right up to silly speeds.

When I drove to the Ring' I squeezed 740 miles from one 55 litre tank (brim to brim with a rescue can filled in the back, didn't run out) and in winter I see 520 from a tank, summer goes up to 590/600 miles ish' driving style dependent of course. I have phases where I don't hang around but most driving is mixed. I've never had it below 32mpg even when trying hard  I can run to the shops in the snow (not even a mile round trip) and it won't drop below 25mpg.

You won't find a purist or high earners doing it necessarily, however literally half the tax, double the mileage, 15+ MPG in all conditions and cheaper insurance made it a no brainer with 200hp in the same sorta weight'ed car, especially to allow me to get some property under my belt  :happy2:

So, aside the sound - I don't think you'll feel performance naked whatsoever and with stage 1 and 2 maps, this will leak from your mind quickly. I certainly don't feel like it was a drop down the performance ladder and I thought very carefully about jumping to the black pump, as I expected it'd be an issue too....

Thanks for that Pete - good review. I test drove a 10 plate vRS today and I was very impressed with it. Going to list me Edition 30 for sale tonight and hopefully be driving the Skoda soon.

Truth be told, I'd love a petrol car as a weekend ride. I've driven my old MK5 GTI and a friends Revo'd MK6 GTI with DSG in the last few weeks and it makes you grin, but for different reasons. A quick diesel makes you grin because it does similar things, but you don't feel like it's cost you exceptional amounts like in a petrol. The real world reality for most families/people is that fast petrol cars are not at all cheap to run, it's as simple as that.

I'd think carefully before you sell your Edition 30 because I think they're an exceptional 'grinning'  car, however the vRS TDI shouldn't be a flat disappointed compared (in my experience).

You will definitely get better MPG from the vRS and the have good mapping potential. I'm currently at 220bhp/351lbft and over a 13 mile commute to work I can average 52mpg.

Is this the same CR diesel engine that is in the GTD MK6 Golf... I ask as I am thinking of getting my GTD done to stage one and just wondered who you have used as these have locked ECU's .

p-torque will sort it for you
