Good morning!

Considering getting this done in my quest for better mpg. I've seen plenty of diesel and petrol cars having this treatment at my friends garage and I have to say he has not had a single complaint from his customers only rave reviews. My Question is has anyone done this to their GTI and did it make a difference?

Use the search function, there's been a few threads on this subject, and I think the general consensus is it won't help much as the gti is direct injection

This exactly.
Get your intake valves checked and manually cleaned if necessary instead.
Thereafter by premium fuels only, top quality engine oil and consider a remap. 
Mine looked like this at 39k and these aren't even a poor example....

Yep as said above pretty much pointless on the TFSI and TSI engines because of the direct injection

As the others have said it won't clean your intake valves (looking at your question there was no mention of cleaning valves anyway  )

So, as it will clean your whole fuel system and combustion chamber then it should improve mpg. Saintsteve had it done and it did just that. His emissions were much better afterwards 

Why is it when someone mentions terraclean everyone immediately thinks you are doing it to clean your valves?

Just an update guys. According to Terraclean they can clean DI engines like the TFSI using this Terraclean tool:

Apparently Terraclean is effective on the TFSI engine.

I'm booking mine into them in a couple of weeks.

That's all well and good, but most of their Retailers don't keep it as a stock item.
Take it from someone that's had this done, save your money.

It will make little difference unless the intake is treated which their red and black cans don't touch.

I spoke to the Terraclean rep when I was at Goodwood last year regarding how effective it is on the TFSI engines. He told me that the current system isn't very good at cleaning Direct Injection engines and was only really good for an injector clean, but they were on the case of trying to develop a more comprehensive system for cleaning direct injection engines.

True...why don't we stop offering up extra info and see how much wiser we become.  

It's a related item. If OP didn't know what these engines can be like for carbon build up he does now and he now knows why it's reported as not effective for these engines. I'd consider it a waste of money if every other part of my intake system was clean and I knew I still had intake valves/chambers that looked like an open face coal mine. VW tech bulletin confirms loss of power etc as an effect of this.

My faulty injector that JKM replaced cured my high emmisions issues...not the terraclean.

I pointed this out to Terraclean over a year ago but a lot if not all their dealers, didn't or still don't carry this equipment.
When you ask them do they have this item, they tried fobbing me off saying it's not needed for my direct engine TFSi .
