Petrol Advise

Am I okay to use standard shell petrol or should I be using 'V Power' or other alternative high octane fuels? Do these make any difference to bhp and mileage?

You don't have to use V-Power, IIRC VW recommend RON95+ for the 2L GTI.

saying that, you can choose to use V-Power which is proven to increase power and mpg. Of course, people normally drive harder with the premium fuel in which causes the mpg to drop, but you should feel the power at least.

On my K03 GTI I noticed a big difference in the top end power with using V-Power.

on 95RON the power delivery was very flat, with 99RON it was much quicker top end, and felt more responsive throughout the rev range.

I havent yet tried 99RON in the Ed30 (I know, I know. . . ), as most of my journeys have been sitting on a motorway I wasnt bothered about the extra performance and the car came with 95RON in anyway.

Will be trying 99RON soon, so it will be interesting to see the difference.

With my GTI i find:

95: bit flat an not as responsive
97-98: Runs great, feels like full power and better MPG
99- Runs even better, better exhaust note but i do lose out on MPG round town with it.

I can only get 97 in my town so usually use that, but will stick 99 in when i go past a station. Inside the fuel flap will probally be a sticker station minimun 98RON/95ROZ.

Look at the fuel cap early GTI's said 98/95 (95 being small) saying that premium unleaded is recommended but normal is ok. Later ones just said 95 iirc

I thought the 95 number was to do with a ROZ number for other European and American fuel? My 2007 says RON98/95roz.

You will still run ok on 95 just with reduced power due to adjustments made by the ECU.

For the price of a pint (£3~) for a full tank of super vs regular I think it's worth it, if I wanted economy I'd have bought a GTD

exactly my thoughts.

less fuel for the money but it lasts longer anyway, makes no sense using the 95 stuff IMO

I used that exact point when explaining to someone at work lol. It only costs a couple of quid extra, do I care? No. Didn't buy the car for it to be economical!!!

Even if the car doesn't perform much better, v power is supposedly cleaner than normal unleaded

I actually find I get better MPG with 99, so this can offset the price difference a bit anyway. It's also worth noting that with the likes of V-Power you benefit from extra additives in the fuel.

Mine says 95-RON inside the flap. I get better MPG round town using cheap Sainsburys fuel than I did when I ran it on Shell Nitro. Opposite to what I expected!

I found the same. The best MPG I've ever had out of my K03 GTI and my ED30 was on 95RON

Now I routinely use V-power, went to put some in yesterday and they'd run out so had to put 95 (shell). This morning on my daily commute the average went over 40 mpg, normally I'm getting 38 on Vpower?. I too was of opinion that I'd get more out of 99

i believe v power burns more quicker so less fuel goes to waste?

Where does all petrol come from ?

Large storage areas collected by a tanker , they don't have separate tanks for different garages (BP/Shell/Esso/Total/Sainsburys/Tesco/Asda) !

The product only changes when they add something to the petrol in the tanker depending on where they are taking it to
