Hi all,

I have myself 2 little issues with the old girl and i was wondering of anyone could give me a definitive answer to my problem.

1) My steering wheel has started to wheeze on turning.

2) My airbag light has lit up, ive used my code reader which comes up with code 01218. I have google this and it seems an apparent problem on the Mkv.

Soooo... To my question.

Are the covered on recall or TSB? Reason i ask this is because i have found a lot of links saying it could be a possibilty.
Has anyone had these done by their dealer?

There was TSB on the seat airbag plug -  it involved cutting away a plug from the underside of the seat and soldering them together instead. I did it on my last car myself when I had a 01217 (drivers side instead of passengers which is 01218).
You are better getting a VCDS scan as it will give a subcode to determine the fault more accurately.

It is fairly common on three door cars as the sliding/tilting of the seat can disrupt the wires in the plug.

In regard to the steering wheeze, you could always ask the dealer as early GTI's had a recall on steering racks I think.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Does it pin point which part of the air bag system has thrown up the fault? can find it written anywhere in your posts, you do say its an apparent problem on the mk5 but it could be anything.

so does that fault code point to a particular problem or just generic?

if generic get a proper scan done with VCDS which will tell you the exact problem with the air bag system


to your 2nd point of the steering wheel, have you tried just lubricating it a little in different places to see if it goes away.

Looking at the fault code its thrown up n what ive researched on the net the plug under the seat needs to be bypassed by soldering wires together that you cut from the plug. There was a TSB realised byVW.

^^As I said earlier, 01217 is a passenger seat airbag generic code, it is the sub code which narrows down the fault..check the link. VCDS can get that whereas a hand held scanner won't

that is like 8 years old, so I am not surprised theyre trying to fob you off with wear and tear lol :(

so to me seems quite simple, get airbag wiring checked/sorted (fyi vw do not endorse soldering only crimping, i personally solder nothing wrong with it but vw never do it) and possibly lubricate steering wheel no more problems  :happy2:

Sooooo... Just had a fiddle with the seat. Had a read through a step by step guide of how to DIY. Made an attempt by taking the seat out. I then decided against it. I was gona bite the bullet and take it to a garage sooo i re plugged all the wires and re fitted the seat. I had 1 more attempt at erasing the code and it seems to have done the trick.

Im guessing loose connection... RESULT!
