Screaming sound....
« on: October 09, 2009, 12:31:53 pm »
Hi All,

Just would like a little advice if i may, i have an MK5 GTI, love it to bits and have made some modifications to it. However when accessing full throttle there is a loud screaming sound coming from the engine. It has always done it but i find it really off putting when making progress.

Spec is as follows:

Dibilas Intake
Forge DV
Milltek Cat back
REVO remap

I think it might be the dibilas intake or the Forge DV.

The car is going in for a service next wednesday and i have asked them to take a look but any advice from you guys would be much appreciated.

Matt

Quality post VC, sounds like it is probably the CAI? Screaming is such a non descript word lol. Welcome to the forum by the way - nice username is that a cichlid reference in there?

Hi and thanks, screaming is probably not the greatest description lol!

It sounds like air being forced through something metalic which i should imagine is due to the nature of the dibilas, i might try and get a cone filter put on just to try it out.

Also might try and get a video of the noise, obviously once my passenger has stopped screaming!!  :signLOL:

Thanks

Matt

The dbilas intake does that. It makes a horrible hu-WEEEEEEE noise that sounds almost like a harmonica. I get it at WOT and under certain under conditions between 3.5-5.5kRPM. It's not the DV.

I've found the dbilas to be unsatisfactory for a number of reasons; it's heavy, it makes that screaming noise, it gets very hot, the pin that is used to hold the intake to the engine often shears, the intake doesn't line up so neatly with the air intake, the filter is very small. There is also anecdotal evidence on the intarwebs that it can introduce lean fueling in certain cars (there was a thread on cupranet about it IIRC).

I'm swapping mine with another one quick; in the meantime I'm putting the stock intake back on.

Intake, the bsh one I had started doing it when the rubber bung had perished from the heat radiated from the turbo.
If you have to ask why, you'll never understand.

I don't know about you but have you found that the t for the dv in your case which I'm on about sits and touches the brake fluid reservouir? I tried shifting it around everywhere but I couldn't get mine not to either touch it or fit with a suitable clearance under engine movement.

Thanks for all the help guys! its been bugging me for ages, was going to change the valve, glad i didn't.

Problem i now have is that the previous owner converted the intake and the engine cover is modified and i don't have the original kit to put it back to standard.

Please could you recommend a good alternative taking into account the modifications which will sound and perform well but without the silly noise?

Thanks again

Matt

There are a couple of new intakes on the market soon - can't comment on the noise they will make but a lot of development going into it.

Forge and ITG are the two main one's which come to mind. There is a thread both if you search.
