I've asked this in the sticky at the top of the page but don't think people can see it.

Looking at changing my wheels to 3SDM 0.05, If I run 8.5 x 18" fronts with 225/40 and 9.5 x 18" rears with 235/40,  lowered on eibach springs, am I likely to run into problems?

Do i need to keep the rear offset between 40-45?

How low are you going?

I'm running -30mm eibach springs now, not looking to really go much lower as this is supposed to be my daily for transporting my newborn due next month.

If I run 9.5 on the rear, and get the rears rolled will that solve rubbing problems?

There isn't a lip to roll at the rears. You're better off trying to get them pulled.

Depending how low you want to go you can make it work. I'm running 215-35-19, give you a lot more space between the arch and the tyre.

This is how mine sits at the rear... 19x9.5 et 40

Yes you will run into problems with your planned tyre sizes.

Pretty sure I mentioned in the guide about running a 8.5 et 40-something and that 225/40 would rub... you want 205/40s (only Yokohama s drives or Michelin pilot supersports are good tyres in this size) or 215/35 which gives you more tyre choice but then the problem is your car has to be stupidly low for it to look right.

And on the rear you need 225/40.

the 3sdms are very common and a lot of people run them and nearly always run 205/40 and 225/40 retrospectively.

Not withstanding that different tyres run different widths, I have 215/35 sessantas on my mercedes wheels and yet there's still a rim protector, a friend has the same tyre size but Falkens instead of vredesteins and you can see between his tyre and lip.

To be honest on eibach springs (30mm drop over standard SE height which would be about 10-15mm on a GTI) having such wide wheels would look odd! Especially if they are prokits which are listed as 30mm drop? or you on sportlines.. :)

Ultimately I need practicality as this is my daily bus  (as mentioned above), i'd only got my eye on the 3SDM's as i really like the style. I'm sure my current rears are 9.5 with a 235 on and that already seems like a lot of stretch to me, not sure I'd be comfortable running much more.

Think I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a set of four 8.5s, run them on 225s (or 215s if they don't look daft).

But screw mod/rolled arches should kill this off? I'm running 225 presently and it doesn't cause *too* many problems. My main worry is the rears when I start carrying round pram/seat and all the other baby related ancillaries.

What et is that wheel?

My mate bought stu's 3sdm's which were 9.5 rear with 225's, I test fitted them And the tyre sat past my arch so I bought 215's

if i wanted to go lower id go for a 225/35 but my driveway stops me  :sad1:

That looks pretty good. Is that 9.5 on 225s?  I guess your running some major lows on coilovers?

This weekend i'm taking off the wheels to work out exactly whats currently fitted (bought the car already modded), looking at the comments above I'm convinced its my 225/40s that are rubbing and not my 235 rears as previously thought.

yeah I'm currently on fk coilovers  with 225/40 on the 9.5 and around 3.5 degrees of camber

At the very least you should run 215/40 on the fronts  :happy2:

I had 225/40's on mine as George said, rears not much of a problem but the fronts were just a ball ache. Even when I had my arches rolled and flared. More stretch/less tyre wall needed to get it sat good.
