2.0 GT TDI 170 Slow Coolant Loss
« on: March 24, 2014, 06:50:37 pm »
Hi guys,

I have noticed that my GT TDI is slowly losing coolant and drops from max to below min over a couple of months. There's no obvious leak and I have seen this sort of thing diagnosed as the EGR cooler or a porous cylinder head, does this sound likely?
I have also occasionally noticed an exhaust smell, a bit like the smell of burning the coating off a new exhaust, outside the car when it runs from cold so does this suggest that the EGR is the most likely culprit here?

Finally, has anyone experience this sort of thing under VW warranty? I have dealer warranty until the end of October so hopefully it will be covered.

Cheers

Thankfully the GT 170 does not suffer from the dreaded Porous head so you can, until told otherwise rule that out.

I had a very slow coolant leak just after i bought my current GT TDI 170 which turned out to be a slight weep in the coolant pipe where it attaches to the heater matrix inlet. If you look behind the engine at the engine bay firewall you should see two pipes check them both for a pink chalky build up round where the pipe joins the plastic connector.

Was the car bought direct from VW, if it was take it back to them to investigate :)

Thanks for the info, very helpful  :happy2:
I'll have a look at that when I get chance.

Yes, I bought it from the VW dealer so I would certainly be going to them, I just want to get an idea of what the problems could be for my own knowledge really.

Mines the same, but I new this before buying it, there is also a known fault with the egr coolers leaking internally from what I have read up on buy doesn't bother me at the moment .

Hi,
I also have a 2.0 TDI BMN with same coolant slowly disappearing and occasional strong smell from exhaust.
First start in the morning is also a little difficult...

Can anyone confirm that this is EGR or EGR cooler related? I'll try to use a mini pc cam to see if i find something leaking behind the engine...

Thanks!

I didn't get to the bottom of this. While the car was under warranty, I had VW check it and the pressure tests revealed no leak.
They also told me that the GT TDI has no EGR cooler...?

Your's still leaking?

2.0 TDI BMN engine definitely has an EGR cooler.
It's connected to EGR through a metal pipe going to the back of the engine...

Still disappearing somewhere yeah. Only slow and never any liquid evidence.

It does sometimes take a while on a cold day but I just put that down to diesel being a bit rubbish ;-)
