Air Filter change
« on: March 26, 2014, 10:37:06 am »
Hi all,

I am soon due to fit my custom induction kit but my air filter is also due a change due to it having to be replaced after 1000 miles on a new engine.

I have looked at a video on how to do it on a GTI and looks straight forward but wanted to double check as things are never as easy as seen in videos.

Also any recommendations on where to purchase a good filter and should I stay with genuine VW part.

Also I have a 1.4 TSI so wanted to make sure the procedure is pretty much the same as on the GTI.

Thanks

I have been using air filters from Euro Car Parts, not difference between the ones they provide (Mann & Bosch used by VW) and a fraction of the price.

Nice one, my garage is offering me discount to do it but cant remenber what they were charging but sounds like something I could purchase and fit myself.

If its just the generic air filter you're changing it is THAT easy.  I think its 8 maybe 10 screws then you lift the top half of the filter box clear, whip out the old filter and put a new one in, screw the top back on and job done.

Your induction kit surely has a filter already, Or am I missing something?

I am no expert but it is the Filter inside the engine cover that needed replacing after 1000 miles due to new engine.

My Induction kit it replacing the standard air intake system

Think I have got it right  :surprised:

Actually just thinking about this I think I may be doubling up here.

First off I checked and it is actually the Oil Filter that needs replacing after 1000 miles so mistake there in thinking it was the Air Filter. So need to check if this is something I could do myself as opposed to the garage who are charging me 22.50+VAT for part and fitting so not sure if that is a good price.

Also I presume on the original air intake system there is no filter at the front where the air comes in but it uses the Air Filter which is under the Engine Cover. So by me replacing with a custom carbon air intake which has a built in filter, the engine one is not needed or it is there for a totally different reason?

Oil and oil filter change isn't too hard if your handy with a spanner.

You are right about the air filter, there is only one in the engine cover (panel type) if you are fitting an induction kit then the kit will remove the need for the engine cover (provided it is specific for the Gti engine) so you wont need a new panel air filter

Thanks JAT115

I may google oil and filter change and see what it is like as if looks too much for me will just get the garage to do it.

My car is not a GTI but a 1.4 TSI but the induction kit I have is designed for that car so it looks like from what you confirmed I have a brand new Air Filter which is not needed. Only thing I am confused about it none of the tutorials or videos ever advise you to remove the air filter in the engine so do you just leave this in once fitted the induction kit or best to take it out?
