RCD510 or MFD2
« on: April 06, 2014, 12:58:34 am »
First of all is Info about my car:

It's a 2005 model not sure when exactly in 2005 but i can find out at a later date if needed.
It has the 6CD changer / Arm rest also.

Looking at buying an RCD510 or MFD2 as an upgrade from the standard RCD300.
i have used the search function to look for some answers but i can only find answers for the later 2007 cars that have later revisions of canbus's etc.

Im also guessing i would need a new canbus to stop the battery drain issue as my car is 2005?
Also i would like to have iPod compatibility in the car. This meaning i would have to take the 6CD changer out to have this as you can't have both but what else would i need if i wanted to have this option in the arm rest rather than the glove compartment?
Lastly what do i need if i wanted track names to appear on the screen rather than "track 1" etc..

Im not sure how the aerials work etc that connect to the back for sat nag use etc or if i would need any adaptors too but the car also doesn't have any type of aerial on the roof of the car like my old golf did.

If i was to go for the RCD510 i don't think i would bother with the iPod dock as i could just use the SD card route if it's as good sound quality wise as the iPod dock

You will need a RCD510 and a FAKRA aerial convertor (two into one). For the iPod you will need an iPod Dock or VW's MDI Armrest Unit. The cd changer loom will need to be removed as well. Best option (and what I do) is forget the iPod and use a 16/32GB SD card. :happy2:

I even have a RCD510 and aerial adaptor for sale... ;)

In my opinion the RCD510 is the better option. You don't really need the MDI input but if you want the added flexibility you could get an AUX input

You will need a new Gateway but this can be bought from Eddie-NL precoded so will be literally plug and play.  DODDS has a RCD510 up for grabs, amazing condition and at a great price as well.

Thanks for the help fella's i can't agree on buying one as of yet as it will have to possibly wait till end of this month or next. Just wanted to learn what i would need so i know for when i do get one. Although if Dodd's is still up for grabs by then i'd happily take it.

Only reason for looking at the MFD2 was the fact it had the sat nav as a nice little extra. If i did go for an MFD2 would i need the same stuff? or would that be simply plug and play without any adaptors? or would i need some sort of adapter for the satnav part of things?

Thanks,
Carl

You wouldn't need the FAKRA adaptor (not a major thing, costs £7) so apart from that it would be the same as the RCD510 for the main ISO block connector. You would need a GPS aerial though.

Why not get the RNS 310? Its the same generation as the RCD 510 with a slightly smaller screen and no CD changer but gains Sat Nav and AUX input. Costs about £250 of eBay.

The best bit is it seems to be immune from battery drain so shouldn't require a new CANBUS. I've fitted one to mine without issue and someone else on here with a 2005 GTI did the same.

Would this GPS aerial have to be one of them roof mounted ones like on most cars as mine doesn't have an exterior aerial from the looks of things on the roof..

Can't say I'm a fan of this from the looks of it to be honest as pathetic as that sounds i'd rather have something that looks how i want it to and do what i want it to do at the same time. Sat nav isn't a necessary option for me as i can get around easy enough with out but its just an additional thought as it can be a nice and useful thing to have from time to time.

Not sure. I've got a RNS510 and have only got a puck style GPS antenna. Still a pain to thread through the back of your dashboard and mount somewhere.
