Do I need an uprated intercooler?

I've been in two minds whether to get an s3 intercooler or leave it my car is an edition 30 with just over 300bhp with dsg remap ecu remap and miltek cat back what shall I do any help apreichated

that's just stage 1, so no I wouldn't say you need to bother with an intercooler.

Cool that saves me bit of money for now. Wanted to make sure the standard one was up to the job with the power increase. I saw a second hand s3 one for sale on eBay if needed one

I fitted both the S3 i/c and the Forge one on my then standard BWA GTI - and noticed significant improvements.

I strongly disagree - especially on (a) an Eddie, (b) a remap, and (c) an Eddie with a remap.

Basically, in that scenario, you've paid not one but TWO price premiums.  You are effectively throwing that money down the drain if you do not upgrade your intercooler.

The OEM plastic intercooler can be, at best, be described as merely 'functional'.  Efficient it is not.  Nor is its placement ideal.  The S3 cooler is much better, but is still compromised by its mounting position, hence why Forge developed the Twintercooler.

I have to disagree with you Shaun to an extent.

If your remap has been wrote for your car with it's fitted parts, whether it's OEM or aftermarket, you can have your car setup running stage 2 power with decent results ..mine runs 330bhp stage 2 and 325lb ft, boost max at 1.275 bar boost, so turbo is only being tickled  running her stock Intercooler :wink: tuned by Niki gower at R -Tech .
We are now coming into warmer temps so if we actually get a summer this year then it's worth having one.

If you do chose to add an intercooler , then it's worth having your remapped tweeked with the further cooling enhancement. :happy2:
If you choose some generically tuned map like Revo then you'll have more limited map adjustments to get the best out of the engine.
Personally I will only be changing mine if my old OEM spouts a leak as it's plenty fast enough and has been logged to safe parameters.

So it's not a " Need ".. More a "Want"  lol.  Part of the slope of modifications  :grin:

If your aim is more power then do it Woody.. But remember a fwd car can only handle a certain amount of power without getting into wasted power/grip problems, but that's a whole different subject and I'm digressing  :ashamed:

In the winter particularly, the OEM intercooler is fine for mildly tuned GTI's  :happy2:

If you only use the power for a quick blast now and again the OEM intercooler is perfectly suited for the job. In milder weather and trackway driving (where you want full power all the time) a bigger cooler will recover quicker and maintain the power.

I don't drive the car hard just a little blast now and then so I'm guessing it's ok for now but I will be looking into getting one just wanted to see if it was a must have with remap. So I was thinking the s3 ic would that be the best option or what else is out there?

THS is a better (bigger) cooler AFAIK. Have a look in my build thread, all sorts of info and comparisons re OEM, S3 and the THS IC's.

^^^^ WAGNER one does look good, "claims" some 10.c cooler than the THS and 30.c less than the OEM.  :confused:

i also went with this combination - top end pull was a massive improvement, lost 10lb ft ot torque low down but cant notice that
Diamond Black Pearl Edition 30, still going strong but now back to Stg 1

You mean you don't reach the tipping point where the oem i/c fails to adequately cool the charged air!  :P


In milder weather and trackway driving (where you want full power all the time) a bigger cooler will recover quicker and maintain the power.
Hmmmm . . . a correctly spec'd i/c wont need to 'recover' at all.
