Gt 170 service schedule
« on: April 08, 2014, 08:14:32 am »
Alrighty,
I've been looking through the forum and online for a clear guide to servicing my GT 170, but everything seems to give different advice.
Basically I'm after the recommended mileage for changing my cambelt and my timing belt.
Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers

(Also found out about getting the injectors replace FOC, so thanks for that!)

Most people recommend every 4 years or 80,000 whichever comes first but some people think differently lol

Yup, as moist plums states, timing belt every years - it's rubber, and no-one likes split rubber!

Also, what regime are you on - LongLife or Time & Distance?

Haha, had to double take that "moist plums"!

Yeah, it's on long service.

The service book only states 2.0 SDI at 80k, and 4-cyl unit injector engines at 100k.

No mention of timing belt anywhere though...

On my GT140 I think it said 4 years or 60k miles (whichever came first) but when I looked through the Service History there was no indication it had ever been done (On an '06 with 67K) so I had it done straight away.

Also it is listed in the service book (as one of the tick boxes in the SH?) I think thats in case the belt/pump are done as part of a general service.  I got mine done separately so I just kept the receipt from the garage.

As usual, one needs to read the small print.  Somewhere in the service book, it will state something on the lines of - please refer to official Volkswagen dealer for any updates to service schedule changes.

VW UK have been advising their stealers for many years (maybe 4 or 5 years ago) of the change in timing belt change being shortened to every 4 years.

Many folks will get the timing belt change done at an independent - so it may not be recorded in the service book.  Did you ask for the old belt, tensioner and rollers?

Yeah I thought it may have been done but not recorded but it simply wasn't worth the risk of not having it changed.  I didn't ask for the parts back because I got it done at my local VAG indie that I've been going to for years and know the guy quite well so I didn't feel the need to ask for them back.  Probably should have done though.

Had a few GT TDI 170s and have always stuck to 4 years or 70k miles, better to be cautious given the consequences.

My approach to servicing might be considered a bit OTT but i normally do 25k miles a year so like to give the old girl some TLC
Every 6,000 miles - Oil (Castrol Edge FST 5/30) filter, air filter.
Every 12,000 miles - Oil change, replace all filters including fuel filter.
Every 18 months - brake fluid change.

As its not cost effective and worth the hassle to do the brake fluid change myself i take the Golf to my local Skoda dealership as they tend to be the cheapest at circa £60 including a courtesy car for the day. Apart form that i do my own servicing.
2016 Mk7 Golf GTD - Reflex Silver with stuff.

VCDS Hex+Can - Will code for beer!

Awesome, thanks for all the replies.
Looks like I'd better get booked in for both belts and expect a heafty bill...
