Help with codes please

Had my car scanned today as i had my ESP and Tyre pressure lights on. This is what was found:

00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Left (G46)
            008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
01486 - System Function Test Activated
            000 -  -


Anyone experienced this before? Could it just be dirty sensors or too big an air gap? If anyone can help shed some light on what i should do/what to check that would be helpful.

Have you activated the ABS function test by mistake?

It involves doing figure of 8's at low speed to get the test complete.

Ive had a look at what the codes are, does anyone have a guide on how to replace/clean rear ABS sensors?

The ABS function test has been activated - you have to complete the test for it to go out.

Seeing as you don't need VCDS for that part it is definitely worth a go.

Done the test and it didn't change anything, i can tell theres something up as the ABS will kick when braking at slow speeds, mainly when cornering which makes me think it would be the front wheels as they are the only things that are changing when cornering but it says its the rears. Weird

I've currently got similar fault codes. People saying you need new wheel bearings as the sensor picks up off the back of them?

You can test the sensors with a multi-meter -  the wheel bearings are a common cause of this DTC. However this is two rear wheel sensors so I would be looking for wiring fault or corrosion in one of the plugs!

Yeah looks like bearings, I'm having mexhanical faults on both sides though. Both rings to be knackered at the same time?

The 'mechanical failure' fault codes are highly indicative of knackered reluctor ring(s) on the wheel bearings.  If it was purely a sensor failure - then the 'implausible signal' code would be there in isolation.

The actual sensors are quite robust, and can withstand a lot of crap, and even a small amount of physical wear.

Yeah you usually find that the worn bearings have started to chop through the sensor yet it still performs without flaw. I'd set aside the cash for a pair of bearings.

You can get them off eBay for £40 a side but make sure you get the right size as they come in 30 or 32mm.
