ED30 Track Evaluation @ Combe.
« on: October 12, 2009, 10:31:43 am »
Brilliant day at Combe.....shame I didn't fit my Inter's as I couldn't be bothered :ashamed:

Will need to evaluate a few things if I keep it.

The Clubsports were superb. Understeer and lack of diff and front end traction wasn't so superb. The Dunlop Sport Max's were good to a certain point until lap 2-3 when heat corrups their grip especially in Quarry where no diff and 300lbs is difficult to modulate. I can go around in 4th gear the whole way around there's so much oomph. I was following Chris Eyre in his Berg Cup MK1 16V running no weight and Inter's and a whole host of other bits...a proper track tool and found out where I was losing my time....in the bends!

Solution would have been diff and tyres as I was continually reeling him on the straights trying to modulate power out of the corners.

Avon Rise was interested easily matching my APR Stage 3 MKIV at Terminal speed on the Rise @ 135+ bigger brakes and more bravery would no doubt see 140 :scared:

The Clubsports were left at approx 1.25 negative and meduim compression/rebound settings on the rear. Yet again the EBC Yellows were superb on the ickle 312mm set up and Motul Fluid....no problems on stopping her.
Big brakes from my experience means later braking on entry but a big bill to replace pads and rotors later on!!
I expect the Cupra R set up would see a nice gain with a good disc.

Got some great footage and had a good few dices.....kept a newly fettled Kim Collins MTM Turbo'd R32 at bay....chap was most surprised and so was I after I found out what it was! His car had the full brake treatment which looked superb. Massive heat under the bonnet.

Took one of the forum members out for a blast so he could sample APR Stage 2 with RSC....sounded good on track!

So deciding the future of keeping or selling or spending more is my dilema. Older cars are definately soooo much cheaper to run on trackdays if you get a good one that's well set up though.

Great report back Ian, glad to see one of the QS Tuning R32's down there, Kim does a great job with those!  :happy2: Did it have the Movit brake set up?

I took a picture under bonnet of the supercharged R32.
They take the drive from the left hand side of the engine and transfer it back to the right-hand side to the supercharger.

Very neat and novel solution.

I passed them on the M4 on the way there. They were in a MTM tuned Q7 towing a V6 engined quattro.

Their Orange S3 seemed to go quite well on track.  :happy2:

ooo sounds brilliant get the pics up  :happy2:

of note your comment below surprised me....

I would expect the discs to just heat soak and then be ruined (even if the EBC yellow held up to the temps)
Are your discs now worn/scored/blued ???
Are you saying they cope , but need replacements sooner as the wear rate is much higher?

be good to know

I'm pretty sure this is you.

I am guessing this is one of the very last track sessions as I only have the one. :ashamed:

Yeah that's me alright

John

Yeah the discs are a bit blue and some scoring byt they are fine on the way home although if you were really fussy you could replace on cosmetic grounds. That's 2 trackdays on this set up.....the braking efficiency is still pretty good but not at it's first done optimal set up.

Haven't researched replacement 312 discs but I'd be tempted just to fit OE VAG ones with these pads for next year's outings  if based on a low cost option. I found big brakes I have run before work well but still go blue, you get cracking issues long term. I was considering replacements on my Tarox kit and time you replace discs, bells and pads it's well over a grand and if fussy you will be doing it every year dependant on how many sessions you do and trackdays. Hard all day outings on track will easily do a big brake in!!

I've got video footage which will need to be put onto disc then I may need some help hosting it.

I'm sure a good set of Inters and a Quaiffe will see low 1.20's if not sub 1.20. This will be quicker than my old 2 litre 16V track car.

Monster MOVIT brakes front and rear....shudder to think of the cost let alone the turbo conversion. Lovely car though.

Credit to the ED30....KW guys came for a spin and advisory...pleased with the results.

No ARB's yet as it's so flat with this kit and the better spring rates.

Diff will be amazing for track!
