does anyone know how the system regens then? or how do you do it manually, i've heard it's something like 2,500 rpm for so many miles,

I believe when in the process of doing a regen, it picks up a different map loaded to the ecu. This adjusts fuelling parameters causing it to burn hotter. The extra heat is supposed to burn off the carbon that has built up in the DPF. The problem comes as it will never do a full regen, down to 0%. It will gradually leave more and more untill it is blocked.

Done 123,465 miles last week, is that a record for a DPF on a MK5?
Read on vortex, vw DPF's are designed for 150K is that true?

How long a dpf lasts is down to how and where it's driven. My wife's 2011 Skoda fabia 1.6 common rail has done 155k and is still on original dpf with no problems. On the other hand I replaced dpf units on some cars at 3k due to driving style pottering around town etc. Removal and a map is a good option but now a mot failure.

Does this mean its burning more fuel continuously on a long run, as its constantly burning stuff off?
I thought DPf's were ok for long runs?

I thought DPf's were ok for long runs?
It means that if the exhaust gases reach those temperatures the regeneration process occurs passively, without extra fuel consumption. That usually happens while doing long drives. DPF love them and will last a lot more if you don't do short runs.
