Van boys!
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:12:26 pm »
Hi Guys,

My dad and I are in the market for a new van but need some reviews, what i want to know is what the vans are to live with day to day and what you'd recommend. We're looking to probs go new-ish 6-12months old and below are the few that we've been to see and have on our shortlist.

VW Transporter T30 LWB Highline
Merc 113 Vito LWB
Vaxhall Vivaro LWB

would love to hear what you guys use, how many miles you've done and what they are to live with day to day or if you can recommend any other van.

thanks :)
Zubi

Dad has the Citroen dispatch (L2H1 1200), hes very happy. It did win van of the year i think too?

Hes a builder and has been for 35 years, hes been through a good few vans. He didn't rate Merc vito (previous model)

Transit every time. I drive a swb medium roof every day and it's as comfortable as the GTI. Only done 20ish k so far but has never missed a beat. Comes with aux in as standard too which you're unlikely to get on a vw equiv.

VW Transporter T30.  :happy2:

Buying a Vauxhall Vivaro will result in you and your main dealer becoming very, very well acquainted!!

New Ford Transits have a stupidly high top gear. So much so that if you have any extra weight in the van you will have to change down a gear to go up any kind of incline, even at motorway+ speeds. A pain in the A*** if you want to use cruise control.

Reading other peoples reviews may help you decide :-

Thanks for the comments - that last website is very useful :)

My main issues is im just finding it hard to justify the £20k price tag on the T30s

At work we have a batch of 60 plate t5's think the 130's and to be fair there not great, the engine lacks torque and you can sometimes struggle and have to bang it down a gear.

We used to have a fair few like 55 plate T5's with the 2.5L engines in and these went a lot better even tho on paper had less power but it was more torque which was usable.

We also had one t5 that was the 174 version and that flew.

Problem with T5's is there spec is daft, you get nothing, and i don't think the build quality these days is as good and there a lot of money for a nice one, and lets face it if your doing a lot of miles its nice to be somewhere well equipped. All ours have are electric windows/mirrors and cruise, tho we do have one with a sunroof  :signLOL:

Me and guy i normally work with went and test drove a crafter other week as think he is upgrading to one of them least the one we looked at came with bluetooth handsfree so can stream music.

I used to have a 55 plate vivaro well i had two and they was both alright to be fair comfy enough if anything id say as a passenger comfier than the T5 as there not the best.

Toyota Hiace ,for me !
Had three over the last fifteen years ,currently have 2010 lwb  absolutely brilliant to drive.
My mates have bought my toyota's and there all going strong ,one is a 96 van.
If you want something that just goes on and on thats the van
They literally do not  breakdown ,ask the AA or RAC , I have only had a glove compartment catch and a battery go on all the three I have owned,
             Hard to believe but true.

Ive had a hi-ace also.

Totally agree there bullet proof as i spent ages and ages trying to kill mine, ran it for about 15k with the timing belt light on but it wouldn't die.

Id literally rather walk than drive it tho, its terrible!

So there you have it.

In short:

A guy with a Transporter (SAINTSTEVE) says buy a Transit Sport.

A guy with a Transit Sport (Me) says buy a Transporter.

A guy with a 257,000 mile 55plate Mercedes says buy one of those.

Hope that helps........

Now im even more confused than before!

I think the general consensus is Transporter form other people we've spoken to too - we had a call from a dealer that said someone has pulled out of their buy (lost their deposit) so we're just getting some more information about that one and seeing what the score is - hopefully we can get away with not paying the deposit part as they've already got that money and get a bit of a deal on it.

Also i've realised the reason for the high prices for the transporters is because theyre soo in demand and VW just dont have enough supply - we were talking 12weeks for a new HighLine where we can pick up a brand new transit limited (top spec) in 10days

A few Scene points always go well down on site - you dont want to be turning up in something crap and looking under the bonnet every 10mins

the vauxhall was only on there as a " well its a cheap van" we were thinking maybe buying something cheap and spending the rest of the money on a nice car for home driving like a Q7 or some sort
