Car scene dying?

As the heading says...Is it just me or is the car scene dying? Just been for a quick blast round my area (Oldham, Saddleworth, Rochdale) n i didnt see a single nice motor darting about. Definately nothing modified and not even a kid ragging his 1.0 rattle box about. Of days gone by the asian lads round my area had fettled motors new and old and even theyve gone awol. Bit disapointed... On a lighter note my old girl is running sweet as a nut with new stoppers bedding in nicely. Hopefully have a nice sunny sunday to give her a tickle with some polish

I do agree you see far less modded cars now, when i was young there was a plethora of French clutter - AX Gt's, 5 Turbo's and 205 Gti's, with Astra GTE, Escort xr3i and RS Turbo and then Mk2 Golfs and Sciroccos.

These days you see colour coded Vauxhall Corsas with black wheels which look sporty but are probably slower than a Nova SR with a few mods!

It is simple - people just cant afford the insurance these days to mod or cant afford the actual mods as have been struggling to get work etc.

Every other car is now an Audi or a BMW and furhter more peopel driving a 116d 1 series BELIEVE they are driving a sporty car just cause it has a BMW badege then look shocked when an old slammed MX5 leaves them for dead

I think mods are more OEM+ so you don't actually notice how modified a car actually is

Just keep seeing loads of big company cars (audi's BMWs etc)

Only seen a few hot hatches recently, and most of them were Focus STs!!!!!

Try standing outside the Commercial or Hare N' Hounds in Uppermill on a Friday/Saturday night you will see plenty of young lads giving it the beans thrashing their 1.0 Corsas (Or similar) with big bore exhaust, Tunes blasting etc, all noise and no go  , can be quite funny watching it, even the young ladies tut or laugh at em (In Saddleworth you need to be driving something MUCH more upmarket to get the young ladies attention).

Saddleworth housewives cars are generally Range Rovers, Audi Q3/5/7, BMW X3/5/6 etc etc

I think your right, but it's more the modding scene has changed and like everything else the innocence has gone. The days of twin headlamp conversions and stainless exhausts getting you into max power are long gone.

Now there are modded cars but they get '000s spent on them, while most of the things (we) wanted to change in days gone by like hifi, big wheels etc are included as standard on cars now.

There's still a huge track scene where people modify for performance over style.

Car scene used to be basic back in the early 90's before max power, mobile phones and the internet. It was word of mouth or a common meeting up place. Here are some pics from back in the day. I certainly dont go road racing and doing dougnuts any more ..... I a far too sensible these days

I had a Nova merit with a gte kit on and gte seats. 17" alessio speedlines with a 1.6 carb cavalier in my 1st motor. It was painted in ford mallard green. Lovely little thing. Just didnt like corners or stopping! Haha

They looked the dogs dangleys. £1200 from wheelbase near me. My 1st finance purchase as an ADULT! Haha The car only cost me £250.

Definitely dying IMO. I'm 26 driving 9 years and I've noticed it in that short space of time. Gone are the days of traffic light GP's in french cars  . Kind of sad really because even though most of the cars were sh*tboxes, it doesn't mean they were less passionate about cars than anyone else.
