Megs 105/205 hex pads combo help
« on: April 10, 2014, 11:19:26 pm »
I've order some megs 105 and 205 but I'm not sure what cg hex pads il need. It's best to start with the 'weakest' combo of the pads and polish/compound then if the correction isn't good I go to the next step and so on until I get the the most aggressive combo yes? But obviously I stop when I get the correction I want.

This is what baffles me here, can anyone tell me the so called weakest combo to the most aggressive with megs 105/205 and CG hex pads?

Yes that is correct.. the weakest combination would be your least aggressive pad and least aggressive polish?

Here's a hex pad chart I've just got

photobucket.com/user/chris1992nufc/media/5313346E-0E49-4194-87D7-9A3340F26AE9-1236-000001BE357ECFEE_zps7c511acb.jpg.html][/URL]

So megs 205 is a finishing polish so would I use that and a white pad to start with then if I'm not getting any correction would I stick with 205 and use the next pad up which would be green or would I change to 105 and try that with white pad?
It's the 'when' to change between 205 and 105 I'm getting lost with in the correction stage.

Like say after using 205 with white pad as my first step would if even be worth while sticking to 205 and using the next pad up or just go to 105 and white pad then just work my way up using 105 and just changing pad until I get the level of correction I want?

Hope I'm making sense ha

yes you are somewhat but you are making it out to be really complicated when it's really quite simple  :happy2:

orange and white are fine to get started with.

Sorry to bring this back up but I seen you said a orange and white pad are fine to start with but would you not say a black pad would be better than a white? I take it you ment orange for 105 and white for 205.

Nope on standard VAG paint white pad is fine.
i always use a white pad to refine factory paint.
Black pads have no cut so aren't very good as removing any holograms that you may use.

you can use any pad with any polish so if you need only a little more cut you can use 205 with an orange pad?

So does this sound about right:

Weakest to most aggressive, if it's not working il go to the next step down.

Start:
White pad with 205
Orange pad with 205
Orange pad with 105

Or

Start:
White pad with 205
White pad with 105
Orange pad with 105

Then after that stage would I do the whole car with a black pad with 205 to refine it and finsh?

Please bare with me  :rolleye:

I've been messing about on some panels from the scrappy and i would say

White 205
Orange 205
White 105
Orange 105

White 205
Orange 205
White 105
Orange 105

So that's the order you use first to correct the paint yes? Then after the paint is corrected do I go over the car with 205 and a white pad to refine?

i understand you are starting out but you are getting far too caught up in what pad to use with what polish to be honest.
it's something you just get to pick up and you "feel" for what kind of product and pad is needed.

just start doing it already.

Well I finally had a play with my DA yesterday on my mams car as a guinea pig   the car is covered in swirls so I thought I'd try so I did half the bonnet. It corrected a lot I was really pleased with it.

My only thing is that their seemed to be like dust all over, not sure if it was the compound or the pad ? Is this normal to have dust when you use a DA? Thinking it was probs the compound and hopefully not the pad flaking bits off.

I found it hard whenever the bonnet wasn't flat to keep the DA flat on the paint and it was a little tricky but I'm sure that will come with practice. Another read of xjays guide and some more junkman vids with help me out more aswell.

the 105 is pretty dusty.  I normally spray a bit of water on the pad when it starts dusting and it minimises it

That's ok then, it was doing with both 205 and 105. Il try a little water or maybes some of my crap QD to use up next time it won't hurt will it.
