Am I about to become broke.
« on: April 11, 2014, 07:44:59 pm »
Good evening all,

Just been recovered by the RAC after my golf died. Having a spirited drive on the way to my mates when all of a sudden I got the oil pressure warning message telling me to stop immediately. I stopped about a quarter of a mile on when it was safe. I turned down the music and noticed the engine rattling like a good one. Prior to the light coming on she was running like normal. Checked the oil level, that was fine. Checked again when the engine was cool, hadn't lost a drop. RAC guy came started it up to check the noise and gave me that look that you give someone who's about to lose a hell of a lot of money. Cars going in first thing in the morning. What could I be looking at fault wise and have I just ruined my engine?

Yours angrily

evening bud!, that could mean a number of things, the oil light coming on is a indication the oil pressure has dropped , therefore not pumping oil around the engine, which then runs the internals of the engine  dry where they then pick up on the bearings and start chewing/ruining the engine , next step i would do is drain the oil and take a look at it, see if theres like a metallic kind of a shimmer to it? this would give me an indication on how bad things have got. not really any good outcome to this imo i'm affraid.

Mate. Have a read of this. Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Basically it was the oil pic up in the sump. It has a metal gauze that filters out the crap. It got sh*ttied up so I changed the pick up etc. It sorted the problem. Anyway read this link then come back to me if you need any other advice. It was going to be pinned but I just looked and could not find it

Was it not just incredibly noisy hydraulic lifters if the oil pressure was / is very low?
That classic tappet noise would hopefully not be too big a problem as the lifters would presumably work as normal with proper oil pressure.

Fingers crossed that it is just this and you stopped quickly enough to avoid significant engine wear or other damage.

If you keep to good service intervals (at most every 10k) , and importantly, clean out the sump properly when refitting, it should be fine for years and years to go.

The minute you had any oil pressure related issues the recovery man SHOULD NOT have started the engine back up.

well said, the more you run it the more damage it could be doing whilst starving the engine of oil, do they not have a fail safe like go into limp mode when low oil pressure is detected, to try and save the engine?

The fail safe is the oil pressure light and the worst noise you can ever hear, the 3 beeps of imminent death.

You can't "limp mode" the engine if the bearings and journals aren't getting any lubrication things will start to wear.

If OP is concerned about the engine at all they need to remove the sump and pull the bearing caps and check. Relatively easy.

Not the first time I've heard of an AA or RAC man start a car that's buggered.

Does the sump get cleaned during a service or must you specifically ask for this and pick up pipe to be cleaned?

Hopefully for the OP it turns out to be a simple fix

Thx  :happy2:
