Buying a high mileage Ed 30, any risks?

Firstly, greetings from a hot & sunny Kuala Lumpur!  :happy2:

I'm returning from here, via India (Another week of working in Chennai, can't wait to get back home), and will be on the hunt for a GTI, preferably an Edition 30. Over the past twelve weeks of exile I've seen some belters go, and being the impatient type, will want one ASAP.  Which brings me onto mileage.

Are there any risks with a high mileage one? I've seen a few touching or just over the 100k mark, as long as the cam belt & pump have been done, I should be OK? Also, I'll only be doing 8,000 a year max, plus the car will be a keeper for a good few years, unless Camelot come up with the goods...

Any info, mucho appreciated.

I px'ed my ed30 @ 76K miles and can honestly say it was running as good if not better at that mileage than it did when I bought it @ 6K, condition and history is king not miles imo  :happy2:

Milage is just a number check history and condition of car plus if buying private lots are owned by fellow members so will know these cars well and will have treated them to everything they ever need and much more

Hi Adam,

As mentioned already, the focus should be on whether the car has been looked after as opposed to how many miles it has covered. Other points to look at:

If you are going for a DSG model, the car should have had at least 2 DSG services. Make sure the service history is complete. Ring VW customer services to verify any servicing claimed to be done at a dealership. Make sure the oil used for the servicing is long life oil.

Not doing many miles a year will in theory help in the long run, I've an idea what I would like to do to the car once I've my grubby mitts on one.  :wink:

I normally twist on about how I wouldn't buy a car with high miles, but someone made a good point to me, you could have a car with 80k miles and be well looked after, or buy a car with 20k on it that has been neglected!!

I've clocked up to 85K miles on my GTI, and because of a good service history and well treated it's holding up well. Make sure to take a second set of eyes, maybe someone who doesn't like cars as they'll probably spot something you won't.

A lot of people harp on about having a mint Ed 30 on say 30k but in reality the car is still 7 years old so are all the parts that wear,maybe more miles puts more wear on the engine but as long as its serviced correctly I cannot see a problem

Speaking from personal experience..
My edition 30 has 101,000 miles on it and can honestly say it drives perfect. My last Editon 30 had 30k on it when I bought it and there is no difference at all in the drive/feel of the car!
It's all to do with it being looked after and serviced as and when it should!

Mine is actually for sale at the minute but I don't think I want to actually sell it! I know for a fact I will regret it if I do..

Iv always bought new cars and basically drove it like I stole it as iv had a works van it's been a weekend car full throttle from cold and not worried, Traded in with low miles before warranty ran out and on to the next until I learned from my mistakes, so you never know I'd rather have a looked after 70k car rather than a 30k car from me, in all honesty I have a different respect for the ed30 and it's my daily and older and got my head on so lookafter it and it's going nowhere soon unless for an ed30 or an r  :driver:
