RCD510/RNS510 - Bluetooth/MDI
« on: April 16, 2014, 01:33:02 pm »
Hi guys

So looking to upgrade the stereo in my 56 plate Gti.

The main features I'm looking for are
•   Stock look that doesn’t attract attention
•   Great music quality
•   iPod/iPhone connectivity
•   Bluetooth which allows me to make calls but also stream say Spotify with excellent quality
•   Optional extras like DAB, satnav and ability to link reversing camera would be nice but not essential if they come at a premium

As I want something very OEM I think RCD510/RNS510 would be ideal but am concerned about how expensive they are. Even if I get one second-hand I think I need to pay extra for canbus, Ipod connector, Bluetooth etc.

The alternative I thought about was a simple Alpine WDE235BT which I think you can get for around £135. It seems to have all the features I need and looks quite stock though obviously not as perfect as RCD510/RNS510.

What do you guys think?

I read that Eddie NL is the man in the know and can fit things but I can't work out how to contact him. I'm still new to these parts!

Cheers

Alpine WDE235BT?  A google for that only brings up this page!  Sure that's the correct model number?

For a 'stock' look you probably want a double-din solution. The RCD/RNS costs do escalate, but apart from the canbus you can probably get it back if you take them off when you sell the car.

Thanks mate. Yes I got it wrong!

Do RCD/RNS add any value to your resale price? If I could get some money back then I might be more tempted. I suppose if sell separately as you suggest more likely to...

Also do you have to pay extra to get bluetooth and ipod functionality with RCD/RNS units? How much does that set you back?!

My rough calcs were:
RCD510 - £200
RNS510 - £300-400 (varies a lot depending on version)
Ipod MMI -£100
Bluetooth -£100
Canbus gateway - £70

All used prices. You may get some extra on resale, but probably not the full cost.  Hence splitting if that bothers you.

If going aftermarket I'd try and get a proper big screen double-din. Will look so much nicer.  I was quite impressed by a Parrot Mki9200 I had fitted to a previous car.

Thanks for that Daedos - really helpful. It’s outrageous that you have to pay so much for RCD510/RNS510 units but they don’t even come with Bluetooth/iPhone connectivity out of the box?! The cheap Alpine does all of that for £130!

Which double din would you recommend Daedos? This seems to offer a lot of functionality for reasonable price. http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-jvc-kw-av61bt_p-31188.htm

My main requirement is something which is not flashy, delivers great SQ via Bluetooth and iphone cable.

If you're not going OEM that's where my money would be. I have no experience of these units, just a VFM & looks thing.

You can get the RCD 510 for well under £200. The non-RDS Chinese versions (still OEM VW) are only £100, and used UK versions can be had for as little as £150. Can Gateway shouldn't be more than about £85. You might be able to live without the MDI and just buy a large capacity SD card instead, like if you get a 16GB card for £8ish and copy all your music over from iTunes.

Its the best option IMO and smartens up the interior as well as increasing the cars appeal on the used market if its all genuine. An aftermarket head unit has the opposite effect.

I'm be toying with this ever since bough car but I think defo going the OEM route with either used RNS510 or RCD510. With the Bluetooth unit fitted are they good at streaming spotify from iphone?

Hi guys so after getting feedback I think I'm going to go with used RCD/RNS510 unit.

Can someone tell me what is the part number I need for Bluetooth kit and for MDI kit? Are there different versions, in which case which are the latest?

Cheers

Also I think I can only go down used route as tight budget.

What do I need to be aware of to ensure I get latest and genuine UK units?

Here's a good one in the for sale section.

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,82648.0.html

I personally wouldn't purchase anything below a 'C' the one advertised above has the 4120 firmware which gives you Radio Text such as the name of the song currently playing etc.

The star button also indicates that it's a newer LED variant.

Thanks mate. Very helpful information. I'm based in London otherwise would have snapped it up already! I've asked about postage. I guess it's always more comforting to pay cash on collection...

Where in london?

The RNS510 is a brilliant piece of kit and perhaps one of the best first mods  :happy2:
